Growth on the cusp of downtown
Just north of Thomasville’s charming downtown strip, Memorial Park is one of the more established neighborhoods in town. “Memorial Park has been around for a long time,” says Lynn Stewart, a Kernersville local and a Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Carolinas Realty Realtor with more than 20 years of experience. “It was a sort of stagnant area for some time, yet has seen some growth in recent years,” she says. Lesvi Molina, a bilingual Realtor with Realty One Group Results Greensboro, says that the growth has impacted the community’s atmosphere. “What the neighbors are telling me at open houses is that it used to be a very safe neighborhood, where everyone knew everyone, but since it has grown a lot, it’s just not the same,” she says, adding that the area is a little busier and noisier now. “It’s close to revitalization happening downtown, which makes a difference,” says Molina. Thomasville was awarded a Downtown Strong Initiative Grant from the North Carolina Department of Commerce, Main Street and Rural Economic Development Division in 2019, and since then, the historic district has flourished. But Molina says Memorial Park is moving in the right direction, despite some inevitable growing pains. “When I ask the neighbors if they would recommend this area to people to live in today, they still say 'yes.'”
Competitive home prices and a wide age range
There are homes here representing every decade since 1910, from modest Craftsman cottages and Minimal Traditional-style homes, to classic midcentury split level and ranch-style homes, even manufactured homes and new builds in the Traditional style. Prices typically run from $100,000 to a little more than $220,000, a range below the median for both Thomasville and nearby Greensboro.
Veterans Memorial Park
The neighborhood’s namesake park is conveniently situated within half a mile of most homes. It’s the largest park in the city and offers picnic shelters, two playgrounds and a half basketball court. At it's north end is Cushwa Stadium, home of the Thomasville Bulldogs middle and high school football teams. Nearby, the Thomasville Aquatics and Community Center, open since May 2023, features a 25,000-square-foot facility, complete with a five-lane swimming pool, 16-foot waterslide and a splash pad.
Everyday essentials around the corner
Locals can pick up groceries at the Food Lion on West Cooksey Drive less than a mile north. In Downtown Thomasville, less than a mile south, there’s the Thomasville Farmers Market, too. The seasonal market is open on Saturday mornings between May and September, but Tuesday Night Markets run weekly year-round. One of Brewer’s favorite eateries is Cross Ties Restaurant & Catering, diagonally across East Main Street from the market. Its eclectic menu features fried green tomatoes, spring rolls, loaded nachos and more. Brewer adds that for shopping sprees or stocking up at big box stores, most Thomasville residents head to High Point or Greensboro. “The city is doing a lot to bring businesses downtown, but it really is just a very charming small town. So for major things, you’re going to go to the bigger cities,” she says.
Thomasville schools
Neighborhood kids are served by the four-school district, Thomasville City Schools. Between kindergarten and third grade, youngsters go to Thomasville Primary School, which earns a C-plus grade from Niche. Fourth and fifth graders go to Liberty Drive Elementary, which earns a C. Older students attend Thomasville Middle and High Schools between sixth and 12th grade. The middle school earns a C grade from Niche while the high school earns a C-plus. Both Thomasville Middle and High School are conveniently within half a mile of most Erwin Heights homes, near the corner of Unity Street and Bulldog Drive. Thomasville High offers a Career & Technical Education Career Pathway, in which students can take classes in carpentry, entrepreneurship, business, health science, culinary arts, manufacturing, sales and digital design and animation.
Easy access to bus transport, close to big cities
Davidson County Transportation provides bus service throughout Thomasville. The Green Route picks up at stops on Unity Street, within a mile of most Memorial Park homes. The route connects residents to destinations like the Food Market and Walmart Supercenter at the south end of town. The 8.6-mile drive northeast to High Point takes about 15 minutes via nearby Business Route 85. Greensboro is slightly farther, but depending on traffic, the 23-mile drive typically takes less than 30 minutes via Business Route 85.
