Woodglen is a suburb enveloped by recreation and retail centers
Residential streets wind through Woodglen, a neighborhood about 15 miles north of Denver in the city of Thornton. “We still have that small town feel, but enough access to a bustling downtown, recreation areas and a beautiful mountain,” says Jamie Pierce, a local and owner of JNJ Comic Books and Games. In addition to the neighborhood parks and open spaces, Woodglen is close to city parks that host regular events. Shops and restaurants are also nearby, located in many retail centers on local thoroughfares.
Single-family homes in subdivisions and traditional townhouses nearby
Cul-de-sacs make up subdivisions featuring single-family homes with two to five bedrooms and architectural styles including new traditional, Colonial Revival and split-level. New traditionals range from $300,000 to $640,000, split levels go for $340,000 to $560,000, while Colonial Revivals are between $585,000 and $610,000. Traditional townhouses are in communities, such as Woodglen Square, where homes have at least one-car attached garages. Prices range from $310,000 to $430,000.
Academics in Adams 12 schools and the High School of Business program
Adams 12 Five Star Schools district serves Woodglen and offers choice enrollment. Nearby zoned schools include Woodglen Elementary, which Niche rates a C-plus grade. Century Middle School receives a B-minus, and Mountain Range High School earns a B. The high school is popular for its High School of Business program, where students acquire ethics knowledge and may participate in career-focused internships.
Denver commuting access and public transit by bus and rail
Denver’s public transportation provider, the Regional Transportation District (RTD), serves Woodglen with bus stops along 120th Avenue and Colorado Boulevard. Just west of the neighborhood, the Northglenn RTD light rail is on the N Line, which runs south to downtown and Union Station. The 120th Avenue also connects Woodglen to Denver via its exit to Interstate 25. About 20 miles east, the Denver International Airport provides flights to over 200 destinations worldwide.
Local parks with sports courts and Carpenter Park’s seasonal features
Sidewalks and bike-friendly roads run across the neighborhood to Woodglen/Brookshire Park, where there's a skating rink adjacent to pickleball courts, a ballfield and multipurpose fields. Cherry Park also has ballfields, a playground and a paved path. Nearby, Carpenter Park is home to the Margaret W. Carpenter Recreation Center—or “Carpenter Recreation Center”—along with sports facilities varying from basketball courts to light-equipped tennis courts. Paved trails loop in and around the park, ranging from less than a mile to about 2 miles total. Carpenter Park’s center bustles with activity during the summer, when some of its most popular attractions open, including the carousel and splash pad. The paddle boat and canoe rental facilities are also open in summer, granting access to the fishing pond.
Celebrating the Thornton community in festival form
Carpenter Park’s Harley Brown Amphitheater hosts annual events, such as Thorntonfest. This festival includes a car show, music acts and activities varying from canine frisbee competitions to skill challenges in the skate park. The event is held on the first Saturday in June with food trucks and craft booths.
Colorado Boulevard retail centers and locally owned restaurants
Thornton Plaza is a strip mall at the intersection of 120th Avenue and Colorado Boulevard, with fast-food restaurants and a Big R Stores. Across the avenue, Mission Trace shopping center has a King Soopers and various locally owned restaurants, such as Las Palmas Mexican Restaurant. In the same shopping center, the JNJ Comic Books and Games has a store in the front and a back room with game tables. “We're a family owned comic bookstore that also sells games, toys and supplies,” Pierce says. “We've lived in this community for 25 years and always felt that a store like ours would help the community come together.” Nearby, the family owned Anthony’s II has served Italian food for over 45 years. The restaurant offers delivery between 144th Avenue and Thornton Parkway, counter service-style dine-in and carryout.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
