Historic Neighborhood in a prime location

Named for its two five-way intersections, Five Points is one of the older sections of West Toledo. Most homes were built in the 1930s; however, some date back to the late 19th century. Many of the narrow, gridded streets are lined with sidewalks and mature maple trees. A narrow stretch of the Ottawa River flows through the community, which sits just north of downtown. "This is a family oriented neighborhood, and it’s very walkable,” says Loreen Banks Kendrick, broker-owner of Jewel Realty, who has sold over 150 homes in the area. “Residents raise their families here for the schools and location, but the main attraction is the West Toledo YMCA. People come from all over, not just Five Points, to join."

YMCA is a hot spot

Attached to Start High School, the Y offers swimming, gymnastics, sports, arts and humanities, and family programs among its many activities. “We also have special programs like Y Achievers for students, which focuses on life skills, career development and college prep,” says Shonna Moon, executive director of membership and marketing. Five Points is not short on recreation and activities, with six parks in the area. Willys Park has tennis courts, a large lawn, a pool and a splashpad. Leashed dogs are welcome. Asbury Park offers a baseball diamond, barbecue grill, play equipment, tennis courts and walking trails. Corbin Park is a small neighborhood space that includes a play area. Each park is within walking distance for some of the neighborhood’s residents. The free Toledo Firefighters Museum was established to preserve the history and memory of Toledo’s firemen and women. The West Toledo Branch Library is a local landmark renowned for its Tudor-style architecture and spacious interior. Built in 1929, the library offers programs for all ages.

Another family-owned mainstay is Inky’s Italian Food, which opened in 1957. Five Pints Toledo Bar & Grille is known for its double cheeseburgers, onion strings and live music. “West Sylvania is a major thoroughfare and where you’ll find the most mom-and-pop businesses,” Kendrick says. ”We’ve got a sign shop, antique stores, clothing stores and repair shops.”
