Activities on and off the water

Residents of this riverside neighborhood have access to many recreational and aquatic activities. Shoreland Park, the largest in the area, offers amenities like tennis and basketball courts, a picnic area, a playground, a picnic area and a fishing pond. The park is also home to the Pinkley Memorial Trail, a 2.5-mile trail for cyclists and hikers. It also leads to Pinkley Landing, which hums with activity as sailboats, kayakers and paddleboats glide across the shimmering waterway. With 59 avian species in the area, the marina is considered a prime birdwatching spot. Other parks include Shoreland Hills Park, which features a playground, a picnic area, and a walking trail, and Shoreland Woods, which offers hiking trails.

Shoreland offers a waterfront lifestyle with budget-friendly housing, with prices ranging from $101,000 to $361,000. "Obviously, the closer you get to the water, the higher the home prices will be," says Realtor Justin Spann with Key Realty, who's sold dozens of homes in this area. Some of the homes here date back to the '40s; however, most were built between the 1950s and 1980s. Architectural styles include ranch-style, Cape Cod, Traditional and bungalow, and even a few condos. A buyer can get a 2,729-square-foot, 3-bedroom house near the river for $ 352,500 or a 1,260-square-foot, 3-bedroom condo for $105,000.

School district has open enrollment

Shoreland is served by the Washington Local School District, which has open enrollment. Students can walk to and start their education at Shoreland Elementary School, which has a B-minus from Niche. Washington Junior High School has a C grade. Whitmer High School, which has a B-minus score, offers Advanced Placement, the Honors program and College Credit Plus.

"Though it's mostly residential, Shoreland does have a few local businesses," Spann says. For comfort food, KT's Diner fits the bill with their "homecooked" meals., La Chalupa offers authentic Mexican cuisine. From the outside, the restaurant boasts a bright yellow facade adorned with vibrant murals depicting traditional Mexican scenes. Inside the eatery, guests are greeted by brick walls adorned with colorful piñatas and hand-painted artwork. Rudy's Hot Dog is a local staple that serves their signature hot dogs along with hand-poured shakes, homemade soup, and chili fries. Residents can head to Point Place, a 5-mile drive via Shoreland Avenue. For a bigger store and restaurant selection. Locals can go to Meijer for groceries and necessities.
