Small but proud El Paso County farming town

The tiny El Paso County town of Tornillo stands as an agriculturally centered community with a warm, familial vibe. “It’s a more rural place with lots of land available,” says Director and Realtor Emily Hernandez of Re/Max in El Paso, who has sold multiple properties in the area. Pecan and cotton farming were once major commodities in Tornillo, and pecan groves can still be found there today along with chilé pepper and onion farms. Paved, dusty streets run beside small buildings like Santa Rita Mission Church, featuring a stucco exterior, arched entryway and red-tiled roof. Hernandez says the community is quiet, but residents are proud of it. “People will get asked, ‘Oh, you’re from El Paso?’ and they respond with, ‘No, I’m from Tornillo.’ It’s like its own little village,” she says.

Ranch-style homes and plenty of acreage

Hernandez says much of the currently available property in Tornillo is empty, 10-plus-acre desert lots ideal for investment opportunities or field workers needing more land. These lots range between $100,000 and $140,000, with more acres costing more. However, the area does include 2010s manufactured homes that average around $115,000 and early 2000s Spanish ranch-style homes with an average price of $220,000, according to Hernandez. Many of these homes have stucco exteriors and sit on sandy lots with patches of grass peeking out. Roads are well-paved, and Afghan pine trees are planted in between lots.

School events that unite the community

“The events that the school district provides are probably the main attraction in the community,” says Sandy Garcia, a human resources specialist for Tornillo Independent School District. Every December, the district holds a Luminaria where candles in brown bags light pathways to each school for cars to drive through. Garcia says people will donate turkeys and canned goods to be distributed throughout the community. The community also likes to come together for Tornillo High’s Coyote homecoming, where families and students parade around town in decorated trucks with plenty of candy to hand out.
