New homes near one of North Carolina’s oldest cities
New Bern might be one of the oldest European-founded towns in North Carolina, but it’s not done growing yet. Some of the metro area’s newest residences can be found across the Trent River in places like Brices Creek, a forested community that’s managed to keep some of its rural charm. “There are a few old fisherman’s cabins there but a lot of new developments as well. Most housing was done in the 1970s and up,” says Gregory Rusch, a Realtor with North Group who has sold homes across New Bern for five years. “There’s a lot of families out there. They like the accessibility to New Bern and the Trent River.” Drake Bratton, a broker with Coldwell Banker Sea Coast Advantage, highlights the neighborhood’s ability to seamlessly blend suburban living with the open space and greenery of the country. “It’s primarily a residential area and encompasses a lot of space. You’re close to town, but with all the green vegetation, you feel very rural,” says Bratton, who has lived in New Bern for 40 years. “You’re only in the county, so you don’t have to pay city taxes, but some subdivisions elect to include city-like amenities such as street lighting.”

Bigger and newer homes than in town
Rusch notes that homes and lots tend to be bigger in Brices Creek than in the neighborhoods more central to New Bern, with the median lot size in Brices Creek exceeding half an acre. Many homes also offer more than 2,000 square feet of interior space, particularly contemporary builds. The community is very new in comparison to the neighboring New Bern Historic District, with new developments continuing to trickle in, and construction dates typically falling between the 1970s and 2020s. But mature trees continue to give the neighborhood shade, complemented by immaculately maintained front lawns. Homes tend to follow Cape Cod, ranch-style and New Traditional designs. There are also several custom builds that incorporate elements of other architectural styles like Queen Anne. Most detached homes sell for between $300,000 and $500,000, but homes on the banks of the Trent River usually go for between $500,000 and $1.5 million, depending on lot size and date of construction. “The people fortunate enough to live in a waterfront home usually have their own dock,” Bratton says. “The views are nice, and the elevation is high.” That higher elevation keeps the chance of flooding low, though homes near some of the smaller streams that meander through the neighborhood or near the mouth of Brice Creek are at an increased flood risk. Brices Creek boasts a CAP Index crime score of 1 out of 10, substantially lower than the national average of 4.

Outdoor activities near Brices Creek
The nearby Croatan National Forest spans 160,000 acres and is popular for camping, hunting and fishing. The park’s flora and fauna include black bears, bald eagles, alligators, catfish and carnivorous plants such as the Venus flytrap. There’s also Creekside Park in neighboring James City, which has a playground and a disc golf course. The back of the park links up to Brice Creek, a tributary of the Trent River, offering a canoe launch and a small fishing pier. Boaters with larger vessels might choose to dock them at the private New Bern Yacht Club. Located near the northeast corner of the neighborhood, it hosts year-round activities for members such as social events and local and long-distance cruises. However, boat slips are limited. Golfing destinations such as Carolina Colours Golf Club and New Bern Golf & Country Club are about a 10-mile drive from most homes. Both venues are also popular for wedding ceremonies.

Except for Merchant’s Grocery, shopping and dining is mainly in New Bern
Brices Creek is primarily residential, so most locals head into New Bern for shopping and eating out. A cluster of supermarkets and stores can be found along Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, such as Target, Publix and Lowe’s Home Improvement, along with several car dealerships. But Brices Creek does have Merchant’s Grocery, which serves as much more than a place to pick up food. “It’s got what you would expect to find at a convenience store, plus a space to rent canoes,” Bratton says. “It’s where the hunters show up with their trophies. Everyone gets together at the grill to eat burgers and breakfast sandwiches.” For other restaurants, residents usually visit the New Bern Historic District. The Chelsea serves up high-end New American cuisine, operating out of a store once used as an early Pepsi facility. MJ’s Raw Bar and Grille down the street is known for its dining room decorated with sailboats and local art and its seasoned, Maryland-inspired dishes such as crabcakes and crab soup.
