Revitalizing for the current residents
East Trenton offers residents some of the least expensive homes in Trenton without sacrificing location, park access and great local eateries. The neighborhood has a diverse population, and "There are a lot of legacy residents whose families have lived in the neighborhood for multiple generations," says Caitlin Fair, the director of the East Trenton Collaborative. Although vacant buildings are common, and the neighborhood has a higher crime rate than average with a score of 7 out of a possible high of 10, Fair states, "There's a lot of effort to revitalize the neighborhood in a meaningful way that allows long-time residents to stay and new families to join at approachable prices." Industrial buildings take up the western end of the neighborhood, providing warehouse jobs to many residents, and with houses $400,000 less expensive than the country average, East Trenton allows more financial freedom for those looking to own.

A very involved community organization
The East Trenton Collaborative is very invested in the improvement of the lives of residents and has been operating for nearly a century. "There are a lot of opportunities for people to get involved in the community here," Fair says. "We're finishing up a project on restoring the East Trenton Library, one of the oldest buildings in Trenton that has been left empty for over a decade." Because the neighborhood was once known as the industrial capital of the world, which manufactured ceramics and metals, the neighborhood "inherited a lot of environmental issues that we're now trying to fix," Fair says. "We want to provide a healthy atmosphere for our residents and are working to remove lead from the homes."

Parking can be a struggle
One of East Trenton's best features is being only a mile from the employers, amenities, and entertainment of downtown. Bus lines run through the neighborhood, with some leading to the Trenton Transit Center. Trains head directly to New York City and Philadelphia in under an hour and a half, and the Trenton-Mercer Airport is a 13-minute drive away. According to Fair, "Parking is a challenge since there are often multiple vehicles per home and very little off-street parking. The only homes that have private parking are those that are next to a lot that was demolished and is now empty." However, sidewalks and local shops make the area very walkable. Capital Health Regional Medical Center is close, bringing some ambulance noise to the area in addition to the bordering freeway bustle.

An extensive park project on the horizon
Residents get outside at George Page Park, where they can join the soccer camp or cool off by Assunpink Creek. "The city is working on the Assunpink Creek project, which will bring an amphitheater, dog park and skate park to East Trenton," Fair says. On the hottest days, Hetzel Pool and the splash pad are filled with young residents of the area. If the park is too packed, residents can walk to the smaller green space and basketball court at Sony Vereen Playground and enjoy some shade under the pavilion.

Historic rowhomes getting some love
Most residents in East Trenton are renters, but those looking to own their home can grab one of the rowhomes that rarely exceed $200,000. "Since the neighborhood boomed in the Industrial Revolution, the buildings are very old," Fair says. For as low as $50,000, buyers can find houses built in the late 1800s that need some love or a duplex around the median price of $110,000. Though many need renovations and repairs, the brick and vinyl facades of the dwellings show decorative cornices reminiscent of Victorian and Italianate architecture. "We offer small grants to support homeowners doing repairs on their houses for improving safety," Fair notes regarding the community center's many projects and objectives.

Administration that cares about its students
Columbus Elementary, rated a C-minus by Niche, serves kindergarten through third grade and is a short walk away for many students. For fourth through sixth grade, learners attend D-plus-rated Grant Intermediate. Fair states, "We work closely with the teachers and administration at Grant, and they're incredibly dedicated and invested in the community." Grace A. Dunn Middle receives the same D-plus grade, and Trenton Central High rounds out the bunch with a grade of C. The whole district is provided with a food program that offers every student free nutritious breakfasts and lunches, regardless of financial condition.

Cuisine from many countries
Residents can get Dominican food and classic American soul food within a short walk of home, and locals can find even more cuisines to the north of the freeway. El Angel Mexican Taqueria is in the middle of the neighborhood and highly rated for its tacos, burritos and mango-tajin smoothie. Small markets and convenience stores, like Freddy’s Deli & Grocery, are around the area. Still, for big shopping trips, residents can head east to Walmart, under two miles away.
