A rural community surrounded by towering coast redwoods
Orick is a rural hamlet engulfed by Northern California wilderness. This town of 300 residents has little more than a few restaurants, a post office and an elementary school. But what it lacks in amenities, it makes up for in natural beauty that can’t be found anywhere else. The town is surrounded by Redwood National and State Parks, a complex of four parks, each home to the tallest trees on earth. Plus, Pacific Coast beaches are just to the west of town. “It’s a tiny, blink-and-you’ll-miss-it town,” says Realtor Lauren Smith, owner of The Key Real Estate Group and a longtime county resident. “It’s bustling in the summer season because it’s right next to the park.” Orick is 20 miles north of Trinidad, the nearest town with a grocery store.
Hiking through the tallest forests on earth
Redwood National and State Parks is made up of Redwood National Park, Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park, Del Norte Coast Redwoods State Park and Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park. These encompass 139,000 acres along the Pacific Coast that protect nearly half of all the remaining old-growth coastal redwoods in the world. Coast redwoods are among the largest tree species on earth, reaching heights of more than 350 feet. These parks have over 200 miles of trails that crisscross mountains, rivers and beaches. “There are some amazing hiking trails in Orick,” Smith says, including the Lady Bird Johnson Grove Trail, Trillium Falls and the Redwood Creek Trail. It’s not uncommon to see herds of Roosevelt elk blocking a country road or beavers damming creeks and culverts. Redwood Creek, which cuts through the town, is a popular place for kayaking and fishing. Orick is next to the Freshwater Lagoon and Pacific Coastal beaches, including the Orick Fishing Access Beach, offering water recreation opportunities.

Orick restaurants and markets
Edebee’s Snack Shack is an Orick mainstay specializing in burgers, fries and shakes with outdoor patio seating. The only other restaurant in town is Mojo Pizza, a roadside stop for artisan, brick-oven pies. Orick Market and Shoreline Market offer a small selection of groceries and everyday essentials. For everything else, it’s about 20 miles to Trinidad, where there’s a Murphy’s Market and a larger selection of restaurants, breweries and bars.

Easy access to the Pacific Coast Highway
Orick is traversed by State Route 101, also known as the Pacific Coast Highway. This scenic roadway is also the easiest way to get around Northern California Coast, taking residents south to Arcata and Eureka or north to Crescent City near the Oregon state line. Because of its remote location, Orick residents will likely need a car to get around. It’s about 28 miles to California Redwood Coast-Humboldt County Airport, the region’s major hub for air travel.
Increased flooding risk
Flooding is a factor in Orick because of its proximity to Redwood Creek. In the 1960s, the Army Corps of Engineers completed a series of flood levees in Orick designed to keep water from inundating the town during major weather events.
