Gateway to the Gorge warrants a stop

Known as the “Gateway to the Gorge” throughout the region, Troutdale and its Town Center are much more than a pass-through to the Oregon’s enchanting Columbia River Gorge. “When I first moved here, downtown was very skimpy. Around 2000, they put in the whole north side, and that’s one of the structures we’re in,” says Jim Kunz, one of the artists at Red Trillium Gallery downtown. Around 40 independent artists are part of the co-op that manages the gallery, and it’s this group that convinced the city to shut down the main stretch of downtown during First Fridays in the spring. As a resident of the city for about 45 years, Kunz has helped with other major art events in Troutdale. “Anytime you have a college, you will have activities in art and music,” he says, referring to Mount Hood Community College, less than 2 miles away. Besides an active arts scene, Troutdale’s Town Center has restaurants, food carts and McMenamin’s Edgefield, a historic property-turned-hotel, which also has a host of activities.

Downtown dining and Troutdale Station food cart pod

Ristorante Di Pompello is a local favorite in downtown, crafting authentic Italian food with a dinner menu that includes 37 different pasta dishes. Further south, over 20 food carts part of Troutdale Station cover a number of global cuisines, with dessert and alcohol options that can be enjoyed in a massive wooden shelter. To the west, McMenamin’s Edgefield occupies 74 acres of land that were historically part of a county farm, with original buildings from 1911. The hotel includes a golf course, distillery, brewery, winery and a movie theater, though some amenities are only available for overnight guests. The neighborhood is also a prime shopping location; the Columbia Gorge Outlets are immediately north of downtown, including Coach, Eddie Bauer, Gap, Columbia and Jockey outlet stores. A Walmart Supercenter is less than 3 miles away for everyday essentials.

First Fridays in Troutdale’s Town Center

Galleries, restaurants and shops on the stretch of the Historic Columbia River Highway that cuts through downtown buzz with activity during First Fridays, the city’s monthly art walk. Local artists and artisans set up tents to display their goods, and live music fills nearby Mayors Square park. “It really fills up. It’s there for the kids and for the families,” Kunz says. “The food places enjoy it, and it seems to me that people are anxious to get out and be part of the community.”

20 holes on the McMenamin’s Edgefield golf course

Helen Althaus Park stretches across almost 10 acres of green space in the center of the neighborhood, southwest of downtown’s gridded streets. A full-court basketball court and a playground sit on the park’s 2 open acres, while a mile-long trail weaves through the rest of its forested acreage, connecting its Fourth Street entrance to the one on Seventh Street. Depot Park is a wooded green space sandwiched between the historic Union Pacific Railroad tracks and Beaver Creek, which empties into the Sandy River just beyond. It’s also next to the former Troutdale Rail Depot, which now houses the Troutdale Historical Society’s Depot Rail Museum. The McMenamin’s Edgefield golf course includes two par-three courses—one with nine holes and the other with 20. Tournaments are hosted on greens with blackberry bushes and views of the Columbia River Gorge.
