Settled along the New Jersey shoreline between pine barrens and a bay, Tuckerton became one of the first Ports of Entry in 1699 for the United States. Once a vibrant seaport settlement, the borough still celebrates the rich maritime heritage of its natural landscapes.

The Pinelands Natural Reserve is a one-million-acre tract of protected pine forest that expands west of the borough, while the wetlands and saltwater marshes span its southwest half. “Tuckerton is a small town that is sandwiched between two pristine environments,” says Realtor Harry Disbrow of Coldwell Banker Riviera Realty, adding that they play a huge role in the community’s way of life. “Primarily, people live here for the rural lifestyle and the ability to take advantage of the natural amenities that exist all around us,” Disbrow says. “It’s a great place to live if you love nature, from fishing to hiking and hunting.”

Tuckerton has a range of real estate options, and Disbrow says there is something for everyone— whether you’re looking for a raised ranch with a view of the bay or a cottage on a manicured parcel more inland. Waterfront living can cost homebuyers anywhere from $200,000 to over $1 million, but Disbrow says your typical three-bedroom and two-bathroom homes in “normal suburban subdivisions” are generally valued in the mid-$300,000s. Houses on the outskirts of the town are situated on roomier lots of up to 60 acres and range in price from $400,000 to $2 million.

Students in the township may attend public schools within the Pinelands Regional School District. Tuckerton Elementary School serves Pre-Kindergarten to sixth grade students and feeds into the Pinelands Regional Junior High School for seventh and eighth graders. Rated a B- on Niche, Pinelands Regional High School prides itself on its 12 to one student-teacher ratio. In the 2022-2023 school year, the high school introduced a new program called From the Barrens to the Bay to enhance its popular ecology courses with immersive experiences that take advantage of the area’s natural setting and proximity to the bay. The program focuses on environmental education through projects like preserving a cranberry bog and caring for the wetlands and local wildlife.

Tuckerton’s downtown area along W Main Street cradles Pohatcong Lake, another distinct landmark of the town that is an active hub for boating, swimming, and kayaking. Residents access the lakeside at Tip Seaman Park, which provides recreational facilities for those who prefer to stay on shore, including sports courts and playgrounds. The park also hosts the annual Decoy and Gunning Show, which celebrates decoy and waterfowl heritage and pulls residents from all over Orange County.

You can also uniquely experience the borough’s heritage at the Tuckerton Seaport Museum, which features historically accurate recreated structures and wetland trails. “Tuckerton has a super-rich history of maritime fishing and boat building, which the Seaport brings to life as a living history museum,” Disbrow says. Catch a sunset along the museum’s boardwalk, climb the Tuckerton Lighthouse or explore the rest of the Tuckerton’s town center. Antique stores and mom-and-pop restaurants line W Main Street, including favorites like Dynasty Diner and the 50s-style drive-up Stewart’s. The Walmart Supercenter and ACME Markets are further down Route 9 for groceries and household items.

GreatSchools: The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students.
