With an average home sale price of $226,000, Barrio Anita properties are roughly half the price of surrounding areas like Dunbar/Spring, and many residents have lived here for decades. A handful of historically registered Sonoran-style houses from the early 1900s, along with midcentury Spanish ranch-style homes and Pueblos, are spread throughout the neighborhood. Outdoor games at David G. Herrera and Ramon Quiroz Park
One of Tucson’s oldest parks founded in 1902, the almost 7-acre David G. Herrera and Ramon Quiroz Park is located near the southern border of Barrio Anita; folks can shoot hoops on the basketball court, admire the eye-popping mural just above the playground or visit the Oury Center for its game room and outdoor pool. Two miles south, the 10-acre Menlo Park features soccer and softball fields where little leagues play and folks can break a sweat on the outdoor fitness equipment. The paved 137-mile Chuck Huckelberry Loop, used for biking all over Tucson, can be accessed under 2 miles away near the Santa Cruz River.

Picking up breakfast at the well-known Anita Street Market
Residents can grocery shop at Food City a mile west via St. Mary’s Road, and within the neighborhood, the long-running Anita Street Market sells ingredients for Latin dishes along with warm breakfast burritos in its mural-painted brick building. Less than a mile southwest, St. Mary’s Mexican Food serves cheesy enchiladas with homemade tortillas (a crowd favorite), and the nearby popular Pat’s Chili Dogs offers wrapped-up Sonoran-style hot dogs smothered in spicy chili. Christmas cheer at Nana and Tata’s Miracle in Barrio Anita event
While the neighborhood doesn’t host too many of its own events, locals gather every year in December for the Nana and Tata’s Miracle in Barrio Anita celebration. Attendees can sign up for a raffle, munch on free popcorn and candy, and have a visit with Santa all outside the beloved Anita Street Market. A mile east, Splinter Collective, a nonprofit community center, hosts monthly drawing classes and theatre performances all centered around LGBTQ+, disabled and other marginalized identities.

Quick access to downtown Tucson
Downtown Tucson is about a mile drive south via North Anita Avenue. The neighborhood is very walkable, and residents can utilize bike lanes along West Speedway Boulevard toward the north and West St. Marys Road in the south. Tucson Sun Tran buses make stops on Speedway and St. Marys Road, and St. Mary’s Hospital is almost two miles west. Tucson International Airport is a 9-mile drive south via Interstate 10 on the western border.

The neighborhood is served by the city’s largest school district, Tucson Unified, which is rated an overall B-minus by Niche. Kids here can start at Davis Bilingual Elementary Magnet (grades K-5), rated a B-minus, and continue to Safford K-8, earning a C-minus. The B-rated Tucson Magnet High is known for its unique student clubs focusing on Deaf awareness and mariachi music.

Housing concerns and environmental risks in Barrio Anita
Unhoused encampments in Estevan Park near Barrio Anita’s eastern side have been a growing issue in the 2020s. In April 2024, Splinter Collective announced its Estevan Park Project, where volunteers work with the unhoused population to build relationships, offer services and participate in beautification projects. Barrio Anita has a moderate risk of wildfires occurring throughout the area. Pima County has a Wildfire Protection Plan and Ready Checklist for homeowners in the event of a fire, and in May of 2024, nearly $7 million in federal funding went to Pima County to enhance its current protection plan. During Arizona’s monsoon season between June and September, there’s a relatively high risk of flooding near homes along the western border of the neighborhood.
