Coastal Kayak living
Just north of the Tulalip Reservation along Port Susan Bay sits the community of Kayak. While much of the community here feels rural, the area is an attraction to many across the wider region for Kayak Point Beach and Park. Also, Stanwood and North Lakewood are around 10 miles to the north and east respectively, with dozens of shopping and dining options. Additionally, the bustling hubs of Seattle and Bellevue are less than a 50-mile drive south.

A range of rural residences
Small ranch-style houses on sizable lots dot the forested roads, but there is a variety of newer homes in subdivisions, and also on multiple-acre lots. “There are a lot of newer, higher-end houses in Kayak,” says Carmen Andrew, Realtor with Re/Max Whatcom County. “Kayak Point Beach is a popular spot for the whole region, so living in its backyard is definitely desirable.” A newer four-bedroom home on a half-acre lot can sometimes be found for under $1 million, while a similar house on five or more acres might run closer to $2 million. The steep living cost associated with Seattle area living reaches even out here, with a median list price of over $970,000.

Top-tier outdoor activities
Kayak Point Disc Golf Resort has practice areas and scenic 18-basket courses for all levels of disc golf players. Built on an old golf course, it has a mix of open fairways and forests all over the resort. When guests are done playing, they can stop by Aces BBQ — housed in the old golf clubhouse — for smoked ribs and brisket. For those looking for public beachfront areas nearby, Kayak Point Beach offers covered picnic tables, a playground and a fishing pier. “Much of the shorefront in the area is privately owned, so having this public area is a huge draw to people all across the region. It’s a fairly protected bay, so waters aren’t normally very rough,” Andrew says. The beach is also accessible by trails winding down through the 670 acres of Kayak Point Regional Park, giving hikers a peaceful route through the dense forests of the area. Though it is likely closed through 2023, the county is spending $20 Million to renovate the park, adding ADA-friendly walking routes, additional parking, a new boat launch and more. Boaters can launch into Lake Goodwin from Wenberg County Park, which also has a beach and picnic tables.
