But the restaurant, which has been featured in multiple publications, is popular for more than smoked meats. “They have great barbecue, but if you go, you have to ask for a side of pickles,” says Myriah Boles, local Realtor with Standard Realty Group. “I'm not sure what it is, but they really have the best pickles.” Mama’s Restaurant and Happy’s Fish House are also popular eateries along East Fifth Street. Tyler’s Medical Center provides health care to East Texas
Midtown Tyler’s medical center has become a hub for healthcare in the East Texas region. UT Health Tyler and Christus Health have award-winning campuses with level 1 trauma centers and a leading-edge heart hospital. The two hospital systems are the two largest employers in the city, with over 7,000 employees combined. And now, students will have an opportunity to become licensed physicians. “There’s a new University of Texas Medical School going in, which is a big deal for the area,” Landes says. The new medical school opened partially in Fall 2023 and is the first to open in East Texas.
