Nature and country living in Lake County’s Umatilla
River otters, alligators, and tortoises are just a few of the new neighbors that residents will make when moving to Umatilla. Commonly referred to as the “gateway to the Ocala National Forest,” this neighborhood gives residents quick access to the second largest nationally protected forest in the state. Being so close to more than a million acres of wilderness and natural springs, it’s not surprising that Umatilla’s motto is “nature’s hometown.” “It’s really country living out here,” says Realtor Kelly LaFave with eXp Realty. “There’s a few shops and businesses, but it’s really all about the country life in Umatilla.”

A charming small town with local businesses
The heart of Umatilla offers a small town with a simple lifestyle. Sunsational Farms is a local landmark. It’s also a spot residents frequent for fresh produce and the occasional frozen treat. Residents can shop at the Antique Mall, a rustic barn filled with vintage furniture and memorabilia. Readers will love the Umatilla Public Library, which hosts poetry readings, flash fiction contests, and reading programs for young children. For a bite to eat, Greg’s Haystax is a family-owned and operated diner that is known for its hospitality and heaping portions. Another favorite is Bear’s Beans and Bagels, the local coffee shop. When residents want to stock their pantry, there is a Publix and a Winn-Dixie just 4 miles south in Eustis. Eustis is also home to the nearest medical center, AdventHealth Waterman Hospital. “Eustis is where most residents the action,” LaFave says. “There are waterfront restaurants and shops, and it’s close to Mount Dora, which is known for its huge art festivals.”
