Diverse Upper Darby locale just west of Philadelphia
Stonehurst Cardington sits on the northeast corner of Upper Darby Township, a diverse, densely populated community across Cobbs Creek from the City of Philadelphia. “My clients choose that area of Upper Darby primarily due to its proximity to Philadelphia, the affordability of homes – especially for first-time homebuyers – and its rich culture,” says Barbara Nevitt, Realtor with Coldwell Banker who has been selling homes for 8 years. “The motto for Upper Darby is ‘The World in One Place,’ and it accurately highlights and celebrates the diverse community feeling that many are looking for.” Nicholas Bahateridis, Realtor with Keller Williams, echoes this sentiment. “Stonehurst Cardington is probably the most affordable part of Upper Darby. There’s a lot of different cultural pockets, and it’s been like that for decades,” the lifelong resident of Upper Darby remarks. “It also attracts locals looking for a better school system than Philadelphia. You do have to pay a little more in taxes, but it’s a give-and-take.”
International cuisine along Market Street and Garrett Road
Market and South 69th streets are lined with shopping options including Dollar Tree, Old Navy and Ross Dress for Less, as well as Sabzi Mandi, which specializes in Indian groceries. Additional grocery stores sit along or near Garrett Road, such as Save A Lot, Uncle Musa African Grocery Store and H Mart, which offers East Asian products. The Fresh Grocer, a large supermarket, is on the south end of the neighborhood. The neighborhood’s culinary scene is likewise very diverse. “You don’t even ask what restaurant you’re looking for: it’s more which culture. Upper Darby has everything from Vietnamese to Afghan restaurants,” Bahateridis says. Eating options range from Little Saigon, which serves its Vietnamese cuisine on porcelain plates, to Kings and Queens Liberian Cuisine, known for their West African dishes with halal and vegetarian choices.
Although it does feature a dining room, Kings and Queens is a very popular Liberian takeout option for folks in Stonehurst Cardington.

The Upper Darby International Festival and other celebrations of diversity
The Upper Darby International Festival celebrates the myriads of cultures which comprise the township with cultural performances, food vendors and a parade of flags. Bahateridis notes individual groups throw community-wide events throughout the year such as the Upper Darby Greek Festival at St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church. Attendees can watch live folk dancing, listen to traditional music and enjoy Greek dishes. The Summer Stage is a school amphitheater on Upper Darby High’s campus with the capacity to seat 30,000 audience members. The theater puts shows on throughout the year, both performed by students and young professionals, and gives kids a chance to act or develop behind the scenes skills like carpentry.
Commuting from the 69th Street Transportation Center
The 69th Street Transportation Center, locally known as the terminal, is a transit hub for Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority services including the Market-Frankford and Norristown metro lines, the Media-Sharon Hill trolley line and several buses. The Market-Frankford train heads to Philadelphia’s Center City, while the other two named routes venture to suburbs like Bridgeport, Media and Sharon Hill. Philadelphia’s Center City is 6 miles east by car. U.S. Route 1 is 2 miles west of the neighborhood, and Interstate 476 is another 2.5 miles farther.
Tudor Revival-inspired rowhouses
Most of Stonehurst Cardington’s housing stock consists of two-story rowhouses. Many residences have a rustic appearance, with stone faces and chimneys. Others show Tudor Revival influence, with brick facades, steeply sloped roofs, arch-top doors and even decorative half-timbering and leaded glass windows. Some townhouses have detached or basement garages, while others have alleyway parking. The neighborhood is crisscrossed by one-way streets which reserve one side for parking. The median lot size stands at about 1,750 square feet, which is enough room to give homeowners a porch and even a small garden. Prices for a townhouse typically run from $100,000 to $300,000. There are also a few single-family Colonial Revival homes just south of Market Street. They rarely enter the market but usually go between $200,000 and $300,000. Homes sell in only 23 days compared to the national average of 44.
