Locals take to fishing, hiking and sports

Aside from hitting the greens and fairways, Oreland has many other outdoor activities. Fishing enthusiasts head to Sandy Run Park to reel in largemouth bass from the quarry; anglers must have a state-issued fishing license. Others will partake in nature excursions at Piszek Preserve and hike through protected woodlands along the creek. When kids want to play outside, they can visit the playground at Dennis P. Dougherty Memorial Park. Young athletes spend time at Marlow Fields for Springfield Little League games. Residents can play on the basketball courts at Connor James McKelvie Community Park.

Seeing neighbors while shopping and dining

As a primarily residential community, Oreland doesn’t have a lot of businesses, but that’s part of what makes the community close. Barb Camusi, Realtor with Keller Williams Real Estate, lived in Oreland for over 30 years. She says, “You’re going to know someone in every business you go into. It’s a very neighborly and tight-knit community.” Many stop by Penn Restaurant in the morning for classic breakfast food in a homey diner setting. A bit further down Pennsylvania Avenue are homemade New York-style bagels at Fill A Bagel & Breads. HG Oreland Pizza is popular for coal-fired pizza and the restaurant’s self-pour beer wall. Adults can stay up late at Oreland Inn, an old-time tap room serving the community since 1979. It’s a regular spot to hang out on the patio, watch Philadelphia sports and play darts and shuffleboard until 2 a.m. When it comes to retail, shoppers make a trip to one of the few convenience stores, like Oreland Market or drive four miles to the big box retailers and grocery stores in Abington, Jenkintown or Wyncote.

A solid choice for commuters

It doesn’t seem like it, but Oreland is only about two miles north of Philadelphia. Camusi says, “It was nice being so close to the city, but not feeling like I was in any way in the city.” Commuters heading to Center City can expect a 16-mile drive or take a train on SEPTA’s Lansdale/Doylestown Line. Locals may seek medical care at either Jefferson Abington Hospital or Temple Health’s Chestnut Hill Hospital.

An annual parade and the holiday light show

The Oreland Lions Club has a longstanding tradition of hosting the community’s Fourth of July parade since 1950. During the winter, locals participate in Candy Cane Lane, a dazzling display of lights and inflatables that decorate residential lawns near the 100 block of Garth Road. The holiday display has been a local tradition for over 15 years.
