Historic District along the Napa River
Along the banks of the Napa River is Saint Vincent's Hill, one of the oldest neighborhoods in Vallejo. Originally built for workers as early as 1890, the area was named after St. Vincent Ferrer Catholic Church, a striking Gothic-style brick building established in 1855 and formalized as a city landmark in 1983. Located less than a mile from Downtown Vallejo, this intimate neighborhood has tree-lined streets and turn-of-the-century homes. Proximity to the water means riverside strolls can be part of daily routines; after all, the neighborhood is right across the river from Mare Island, home to several walking trails and the first naval shipyard on the Pacific coast.

Preserving history through architecture in Saint Vincent's Hill
Gridded streets lined with sidewalks gently rise and fall with the hilly terrain. Victorian homes have modest, fenced-in yards dotted with flowering bushes. Homes may be small by modern standards, but many have views of the river and Mare Island. “They’re unique, historic homes with a lot of character,” says Rachel Mau, third-generation Realtor specializing in the Vallejo and Benicia markets. “The old Craftsmans from the 1800s and 1900s take you back in time. But being a historic district presents different challenges, like you can’t choose or change the house’s aesthetic without running it by the district.” Single-family home prices range from $350,000 to $575,000, and multifamily homes cost between $575,000 and $995,000. The Saint Vincent’s Hill Neighborhood Coalition meets monthly to bring residents together for potlucks and discussions. The area near the river is somewhat noisy, but things are calm and quiet on the eastern side of the neighborhood. The waterfront breeze makes Saint Vincent’s Hill a few degrees cooler than inland communities.

The oldest city park on the West Coast
Saint Vincent's Hill is next to the Napa River, which provides tons of recreation opportunities. Barbara Kondylis Waterfront Green is an open space along the river and a popular spot for parties and events. Residents can watch boats make their way to the Vallejo Municipal Marina and the Vallejo Yacht Club, and explore the area’s maritime heritage at the Vallejo Naval Historical Museum. A playground and colorful murals can be found at City Park in the neighborhood’s northeast quadrant. As the oldest municipal park on the West Coast, City Park has served the community since 1868. Neighbors can stop to smell the flowers at Saint Vinnie’s Community Garden or volunteer with the neighborhood coalition to grow produce themselves.
