Just 10 miles north of the bustling city of Portland, Arnada, Washington remains a vintage bastion of Pacific Northwest serenity. “It’s one of the oldest neighborhoods in the downtown area,” says City of Vancouver Neighborhood Liaison Brent Waddle. “This is a community with that older feel, people care and engage with local politics.” With homes near 100 years old, and traditional eateries, it’s clear why the people of Arnada are proud of their neighborhood.

A three-bedroom ranch-style home in Arnada starts at $400,000 while larger, modern builds can cost around $775,000. Newer homes, built in 2021 share the block with houses from the 1930s to give Arnada an eclectic and evolving feel. You won’t feel far from nature as mature trees tower over lawns kept green all year by the steady Washington rains. The gridded outline of the neighborhood combined with the flat sidewalks make it an ideal place to go for a morning jog or take the dog on an afternoon walk. With quick and direct access to I-5, Portland is just an easy 10-mile drive away.

Students enter the Vancouver Public Schools system, beginning at Hough Elementary School, which holds a C-plus rating on Niche. Hough offers pre-kindergarten education for students beginning at three years old. From there, students head to the C-rated Discovery Middle School, before moving to Hudson Bay High School, which earned a C-plus rating. At Hudson Bay, students have the ability to create a curriculum that will cater to their future plans. Programs are available for students who want to enter a career in construction, education, and civil engineering.

Locals gather at Arnada Park to play a pickup game on the basketball courts. With a large walkway and a large grassy area, the park is an ideal place to walk the dog, and features a full playground area. For more options, The Waterfront Vancouver provides plenty of outdoor options just a mile away. Residents can take a long walk or bike ride along the Columbia River Renaissance Trail and enjoy the view of Mount Hood in the distance. For a traditional workout, the Marshall/Luepke Community Center has everything from a full fitness center to a 25-yard lap pool. Locals can utilize the dance and aerobics studio, or pump iron in the weight room.

The food in Arnada does not disappoint, and the day gets started at Bleu Door Bakery for biscuits and gravy or an order of their famous beignets to accompany a fresh cup of coffee. Dulin’s Village Café has you covered with traditional Irish breakfast and lunch options. The Belfast Burger is a house specialty featuring American Kobe beef and thick-cut bacon. When the people of Arnada are craving pizza, they turn to The Pie Hole to get their fix. There is no shortage of options with 15 specialty pies, but one of the top-sellers is the All About the Meat, a 16-inch pizza loaded with six specialty meats. Wahi Hana is the place for a nightcap with plenty of signature cocktails.

La Bottega Café Deli and Wine Shop provides homemade pastas, fine Italian meats and hundreds of wines to choose from to create the perfect meal at home. Be sure to stop in on Tuesdays when all wine is 50% off. OMW Uptown Market is a boutique grocer with local options. For a larger shop to stock up for the entire week, Safeway is just ten blocks north of Arnada, off of Main Street. Everybody’s Music is a record store sure to pique the interest of any music lover. Even more retail options, including a Target, reside at Jantzen Beach Supercenter just a couple of miles down I-5.
