Suburban Neighborhood in Vancouver, Washington
Clark County 98661, 98663
Central Park is one of central Vancouver's oldest neighborhoods and has the housing stock to prove it.
During the mid-1800s, many officers stationed at Fort Vancouver lived in this neighborhood if they had permission to live off base. While their original houses have since been torn down, many Central Park residents have found square nails and fragments of China on their property that these officers left behind more than 150 years ago. Today, smaller bungalows and minimalist traditional houses built between the 1910s and the 1940s line the neighborhood's streets. These houses have since been updated and sit atop 4,000- to 8,000-square-foot lots with enough space for a small driveway, a few bushes or flowering trees, and a carport instead of a garage. Even though previous owners have updated these houses, they typically fetch $300,000 to $450,000 – well below the Portland Metro's median home price -- because of their age and smaller size. Sidewalks are far less common in this neighborhood than in other parts of the city, though it's still possible to get around without a car because there are bike lanes on its main thoroughfares.
The Central Park neighborhood encompasses Clark College's main campus, Hudson's Bay High School, the historic Old City Cemetery, the Vancouver VA Hospital, and the Washington State School for the Blind as it stretches one-and-a-quarter miles down Mill Plain Boulevard from Interstate 5 to North Grand Boulevard. Scattered among these institutions, you'll find the city's 25-acre Water Works Park, where you'll find a walking trail and the 12,000-square-foot Swift Skate Park, the 3.5-acre Quarnberg Park, and the 14-acre Marshall Park. These last two parks have a playground for children, though the one at Marshall Park is currently closed as it and the park's picnic shelter are undergoing a major renovation. Children who grow up in Central Park will attend Harney Elementary School, one of four elementary schools participating in the Vancouver School District Spanish-English Dual Language Program that teaches both languages to students throughout the day. From here, they'll move on to Discovery Middle School and Hudson's Bay High School.
And Walmart's Vancouver Neighborhood Market sits just across the street from the neighborhood's northeast corner at North Grand Boulevard and East Fourth Plain Boulevard. A handful of local restaurants surround this store, including Pho Hong Phat Vietnamese Restaurant, Thai Little Home Thai Restaurant, and the Mi Casa Pupuseria Y Mexican Restaurant, which serves El Salvadorean and Mexican staples. People who'd like to avoid the crowds at Walmart for a simple grocery run can head south to the Grand Central Retail Center, where you'll find a
Fred Meyer, The Rock Wood Fired Pizza restaurant, and Cecilia, a brunch spot known for its smoked steelhead hash and cocktail selection. Not to mention the neighborhood's two main streets, East Fourth Plain Boulevard and East Mill Plain Boulevard, have exits on I-5 that will get you to downtown Portland's restaurants and shops in less than 15 minutes.
For nearly 150 years, people have been taking advantage of Central Park's convenient location. Add that to its collection of older homes, and you've got two reasons why this neighborhood is a great place to call home.
