Community-minded area near popular greenway
Tiny suburban communities with surrounding retail are common outside St. Louis. One example is Velda Village Hills, a small, unassuming neighborhood along Route 115. This area is a short drive from St. Charles and St. Louis, with schools nearby and retail closer still. In 2022, the St. Louis County HOME Consortium recognized that improvements were needed and allocated $20,000 toward street paving. St. Vincent Greenway Park is another feature that brings folks closer together. “It’s a small neighborhood, so it has that sense of community,” says Realtor Matt Midden of Keller Williams Realty St. Louis. Some 1,000 residents occupy simple, modest builds from the 1930s and 40s, many of which have been renovated.
Bungalows cozied up close together
Houses in this neighborhood are neatly organized and packed close together. The streets are wide and in good condition, making parking feasible. Yards are small, but healthy patches of grass make for a modest garden or shrub to greet visitors as they make their way up the paved steps or walkway. Bungalows with brick siding are the most common style, with an artistic cobblestone appearing occasionally. Houses here cost far below the national average, fetching about $23,000 to $105,000.

Taking Route 115 around town
To get around, residents can use the Metro St. Louis. The bus runs along Route 115, meaning just a short walk to the neighborhood's edge will grant access to the town amenities. Since houses here are on the outskirts of St. Louis, owning a vehicle is the best choice for transportation, but it’s not a deal breaker. Route 115 connects Velda Village Hills, Beverly Hills, Uplands Park and more to the retail nearby.

The Alliance for a Healthier Generation recently awarded the school a Bronze for its efforts in teaching kids gardening and emphasizing good diets and exercise. Normandy High rounds out the list with a D grade. They recently celebrated their centennial.

Pizza and retail a short drive away
Just up the road is a local favorite, Imo’s Pizza. Folks can grab variations on classic recipes, like creamy garden garlic or the egg-ceptional. They also offer salads and sandwiches for those who don't want a slice. The neighborhood also has a Lee’s Famous Chicken for when cooking dinner is too much of a hassle. Filling prescriptions is just as convenient with a Walgreens nearby. Decorating the home can be tedious, but fortunately, the folks living in Velda Village Hills can access the Super Dollar Buster furniture store. It’s located on Natural Bridge Road, as is the O’Reilly Auto Parts for unexpected car needs.

Enjoy scenic view of Bugg Lake near Velda Village Hills.
Fresh air at St. Vincent Greenway Park
Locals head to St. Vincent Greenway Park for a relaxing afternoon walk. Make use of the picnic tables and benches for gatherings of friends and family. For larger groups, the park also has a covered shelter. Long walks in the parks’ open fields and paved paths are a given, but it’s also bike-friendly, so amateur cyclists can get their exercise and even store their bikes on the public racks. Fishing enthusiasts will also be happy. Bugg Lake is a man-made spot stocked with bass and crappie on the park's far side. Grab shade under a tree and enjoy the view of the fountain at the lake’s center.
Coming together for a common goal
The neighborhood has struggled over the years, so residents create community-building events to stay connected. A kids’ fishing derby was recently held up the road at Mathison Lake, where kids competed for the smallest and largest fish caught. There are also plenty of events in St. Charles, especially for dog lovers. Bass Pro Shops has seasonal Santa’s Wonderland events where kids can get a free picture with Santa and bring their dog along too. The neighborhood also has its own watch, which meets at City Hall. “Neighbors look out for one another, and they have their own police department,” says Midden.
