Native flora, historic homes and Vernon River views
Vernonburg is one of Savannah’s coveted historic districts with desirable water views. Positioned on the scenic White Bluff of its namesake river, Vernonburg had early beginnings in the 18th Century with character-rich housing developments that date from the 1840s to the 1940s, many built of wood, brick, and stucco. The town is known as a wildlife rescue and sanctuary, evidenced by its lush natural landscape. Vernonburg homeowners enjoy secluded resort-style living less than 15 miles from downtown Savannah. “People buy here for the lifestyle they want, and islanders want views away from the city,” says Joel Solomon, Realtor at Century 21 Solomon Properties and Savannah local.

Historical character and ornate landscaping
The town is small, with a total area of about half a square mile, but Vernonburg residents aren’t left wanting for outdoor space. Homeowners tend to have large front lawns embellished with camellias, azaleas, and other native flora. The peaceful residential streets course underneath a thick oak canopy dripping with Spanish moss. The area’s Federal, Italianate and Colonial Revival styles overlook Vernon River, many with private docks and floating decks. Prices start around $750,000, which can buy a two-bedroom stick-built spot on the water. A $900,000 budget can secure a home with more living space, historical character and modern updates. Vernonburg locals tend to stick around, so these residences don’t change hands often. The town’s limited inventory can drive a competitive market, and most listings find new owners within a month or two.

Scenic walks at Joseph Tribble Park
When they’re not fishing or boating on the river, Vernonburg locals get outside at Joseph Tribble Park, where they can walk or bike around the looped path or bring the kids to hang out at the playground. Pet owners enjoy the Windsor Forest Dog Park, where they can let their furry friends run free among the towering oaks and extra-spacious grounds. La Vida Golf Club is also nearby, where Vernonburg locals can play a fast 9-hole round on the lush Bermuda greens.
Residents in Vernonburg can grocery shop at the nearby Target.
Minutes from Savannah Mall
Large Plaza is a convenient one-stop-shop for errand-running, where Vernonburg locals can check off the grocery list at Publix Super Market and stop at Walgreens or CVS pharmacies before heading home. Shoppers can continue for another mile to visit the sprawling Savannah Mall, its traditional indoor setup filled with familiar retailers and anchored by Target. Chain restaurants surround the retail hot spots for easy meals on the go. Seafood markets are prevalent in this waterside town, and Southside Seafood is the neighborhood favorite, known for its low country boil. Vernonburg locals make their way toward downtown Savannah for culture, dining and nightlife.
Windsor Forest High School is a public school in Savannah, GA.
Windsor High students earn their diplomas
Vernonburg’s school-aged kids can attend the Savannah-Chatham Couty Public School System. Many start at White Bluff Elementary and continue to Southwest Middle before finishing at Windsor Forest High. Each has an overall Niche score of C or higher and is within an 18-minute drive away. Windsor High consistently exceeds a 90% graduation rate, and many rising students continue to Georgia Southern and Georgia State universities. Many Vernonburg residents opt for education alternatives with several strong private schools nearby, including the top-rated Savannah Country Day School.
Truman Parkway access
“People on the south side are often closer to their employers,” Solomon says. Savannah’s medical centers comprise a large portion of the regional workforce, and St. Joseph’s Hospital is a short 3 miles outside of town. Locals have immediate access to the Harry S. Truman Parkway (just “Truman Parkway” locally), which funnels directly into downtown Savannah. Most Vernonburg locals are drivers, but the city’s CATS buses make stops along the main roads for those who prefer a car-free commute around town.
