Historic suburb on a peninsula
Alanton is a historic neighborhood exuding luxury and tradition with its contemporary waterfront estates and vintage homes. The history of Alanton dates to the 17th century when King Charles I granted land to Henry Woodhouse – land that would stay with his family for the next 300 years. It's in the Great Neck area on a peninsula bound by Broad Bay and Linkhorn Bay. The community is filled with intergenerational families who are often out walking, riding bikes and exchanging hellos in this friendly community. “A family member recently bought a home here and said they were amazed by how kind and supportive their neighbors were as they moved in,” says Patti Frankenfield, a Realtor with BHHS Towne Realty, who’s been selling homes in the area for 40 years.
First Landing State Park, Alanton Baycliff Recreation Center
First Landing State Park, the most visited park in the state, offers a quiet retreat with bald cypress swamps, maritime forests and tidal marshes where residents can hear songs of shorebirds and warblers. Hike more than 19 miles of trails and feel the ocean waves crash along the shoreline. Behind the acres of lush woodland, the Alanton Baycliff Recreation Center has been a meeting spot in this community for over 50 years. The center offers a 25-meter pool with a waterslide and a smaller pool for kids. Linkhorn Cove and Broad Bay give access to explore the waterways with a boat or paddleboard. Those who enjoy fishing can spend the early mornings catching Spotted Seatrout and Puppy Drum fish in the bay. For those with a green thumb, the Alanton Garden Club plants vibrant camellias and azaleas throughout the neighborhood.
Alanton Civic League events
The Alanton Civic League is an active community organization keeping residents informed and connected. The league hosts an annual Easter egg hunt and a 4th of July Parade. "They have the fire engines come and they hose down the kids,” Frankenfield says.
1960s ranch-style homes
Mature dogwood trees line this suburban neighborhood’s winding streets. Older colonial-style homes in the area date back to the 1920s, but the area really began establishing itself in the 1960s with the construction of ranch-style properties. Cape Cod-style homes, farmhouses and Dutch colonials can also be found here. Three-to-four-bedroom homes typically sell for $750,000 to $900,000, while contemporary waterfront estates can sell for up to $4 million.
Legal studies academy at First Colonial High
Kids may start at Alanton Elementary with an A from Niche, before going to Lynnhaven Middle, which also earns an A. Students may then attend First Colonial High, which gets an A-minus and serves as the legal studies academy for the school district.
Shopping and dining at Great Neck Village
Harris Teeter is just around the corner in Great Neck Village Shopping Center. The shopping center also holds The Bagel Baker, which has New York-inspired bagels. Coastal Grill has been a neighborhood staple since 1989, known for its fresh, locally sourced seafood. And Sunrise Cafe serves classic American breakfast and lunch favorites. The neighborhood is also 2 miles north of additional shopping and dining at Hilltop.
Close to I-264
Alanton’s suburban streetscape makes the area car dependent. Residents can take North Great Neck Road south to Interstate 264, which offers easy access to Downtown Norfolk and the rest of Hampton Roads.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
