Amphibious suburb across from Little Creek
There are plenty of suburbs in the United States where American flags sway on flag poles in front yards. Lake Shores fits into that category, but its connection to Uncle Sam runs deeper than just patriotic aesthetics. This Virginia Beach suburb is across the street from Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek-Fort Story, a major center of operations for the U.S. Navy and nearly every Navy SEAL on the East Coast. “Every SEAL Team in Virginia Beach is based out of Little Creek, except Six. They keep them separate at Dam Neck,” says Cindy Caskey, a Realtor with Berkshire Hathaway Home Services RW Towne Realty who lives near Lake Shores and specializes in the Shore Drive corridor. “I sell a lot of houses to SEALs. They can literally run to work, there’s crosswalks.” As its name suggests, Lake Shores also enjoys a less militarized border along the forested banks of the Little Creek Reservoir, a placid neighbor to an even larger lake-centered nature preserve. Through its decidedly amphibious amenities, Lake Shores takes a page out of its Navy base neighbor’s book. Its public schools, dining, recreation and community spaces center around landlocked suburbs, but waterfront views are only a few steps away in the backyard or a few miles further along the Chesapeake Bay.
Ranch-style homes on landlocked and waterfront Lake Shores streets
Most of Lake Shores enjoys the tranquil, tree-shaded atmosphere popular in midcentury suburban development, but thanks to the inland-creeping fingers of Little Creek Reservoir, it also offers waterfront views and backyard docks to many of its gently winding suburban streets. Classic 1950s through 1960s ranch-style homes are common, selling for $275,000 to $600,000. Larger colonials, split-levels and custom-built homes taking advantage of waterfront lots sell for $410,000 to $675,000. Townhouse-style condos sell for $220,000 to $250,000. While storm surge may not be a concern, noise from the neighbors might be – though it’s not the type locals are likely to call in a complaint about. “I’d say 23455 is the quietest ZIP code in Virginia Beach. But sometimes, taking out the trash, you might hear machine guns going off from Little Creek,” Caskey says. “In the morning you hear “Reveille,” and taps at night, just in the background. It’s comforting, I don’t mind hearing that. It’s pretty cool – it means we’re protected.”
Caribbean and Hampton Roads medical connections through Bayside High
Shelton Park Elementary School earns an A-minus from Niche, as does Independence Middle School. Bayside High School earns a B-plus and is known for its magnet Health Sciences Academy. Students who meet high academic criteria can gain conditional admission to St. George’s University’s medical and veterinary schools in Grenada. Partnerships with closer-to-home medical centers give students other mentorship opportunities, including conducting research with Eastern Virginia Medical School.
Commuting from near Little Creek-Fort Story
While bases reflecting all the military’s branches are scattered throughout Hampton Roads, none are more convenient to Lake Shores than Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek-Fort Story, which is just across Shore Drive. Commuters head toward the confluence of interstates 64 and 264 on the 11-mile drive to downtown Norfolk. Though most rely on personal vehicles to get around, Hampton Regional Transit buses make stops along Shore Drive. Norfolk International Airport is about 6 miles away. The Sentara Independence medical center is around 3 miles down its namesake boulevard.
Exploring Lake Smith Lake Lawson Natural Area
Private piers and short docks hide under the tree canopy along Little Creek Reservoir, but even those in Lake Shores without backyard access aren’t far from the water. Mirrored across U.S. Route 13, Lake Smith Lake Lawson Natural Area is dozens of acres in size, inviting kayakers to launch their watercraft, anglers to cast from piers and those seeking land-based recreation to explore forested hiking trails or hit the playground. Chic’s Beach is only about 3 miles away, offering gentler surf and less tourist-choked beaches than the rest of Virginia Beach’s coastal destinations thanks to its position on the Chesapeake Bay. Caskey reports that, should they arrive at the right time of day, beachgoers might catch SEALs training to run long distances in the sand.
Shopping and dining along Shore Drive
Shore Drive is a major commercial corridor, lined by collections of strip malls on the stretches not bordering military bases or spanning Chesapeake Bay inlets. Lake Shores Plaza is closest to home, anchored by a Food Lion. Shore Drive’s intersection with Pleasure House Road takes diners to plenty of locally owned restaurants, including rustic-chic spots for American cuisine like New River Taphouse. Further down Shore Drive, Caskey recommends Leaping Lizard Cafe. “They’re very homemade, there are chickens walking around out back – it’s very charming.”
Keeping up with the Lake Shores Civic League
Synergy across lakefront neighborhoods connects the residents and civic league organizers through the joint Lake Shores, Lakeview Shores and Lakeview Park Facebook page. Speakers draw members to civic league meetings at Shelton Park Elementary, and neighbors plan yard sales and return missing pets or car keys throughout the year. The Lakeview Shores chapter is especially active, advertising plenty of holiday events like Trunk or Treat and show times for theatrical productions held at Chalice Christian Church.
