A mammoth find in North Lake Waco
In 1978, while walking along a creek in the area now known as North Lake Waco, two men made a startling discovery: massive, moss-coated bone fragments protruding from clay along the riverbank. The fossils turned out to be the remnants of Columbian mammoths — the country's first and only recorded evidence of a nursery herd. The site earned National Monument status in 2015, helping form the backbone of this neighborhood on Waco's outskirts. “There’s not much ‘town’ out here,” says Joe Reed, Realtor with Weichert Realtors and 2024 president of the Waco Association of Realtors. “It’s a suburban area with farmland and lots to be developed.” The neighborhood is also the home of Waco Regional Airport and Hawaiian Falls Waco, a family-oriented waterpark.

Builds of brick and stone
In recent years, real estate developers have caught on to the potential of this lakeside region. While some ranch-style homes date to the 1970s, single- and two-story contemporary builds with brick and stone construction are more common. Regional builders Stylecraft and D.R. Horton dominate subdivisions like Brentwood and Foxborough with homes that share similar floor plans and architectural flair. Many newer houses have attached garages and intricate entryways with eye-catching arches and columns. Some properties on North Shore Circle offer views of the fairway at Lake Waco Golf Club. On average, three- and four-bedroom homes cost $300,000 to $500,000, with larger estates in gated communities fetching $500,000 to $700,000.

Finding fossils at Waco Mammoth National Monument
Field trips to the Waco Mammoth National Monument are standard practice for local students. Though many fossils now reside in the Mayborn Museum Complex at Baylor University 6 miles away, most specimens excavated since 1990 remain within the bone bed. Visitors can observe the skulls and tusks in the climate-controlled Dig Shelter, inspect an 11,000-year-old mammoth tooth and enjoy a stroll along the nature trails. Experienced and amateur golfers tee off at Lake Waco Golf Club, a semi-private facility with two 18-hole courses. Airport Beach Park is between the lake and the airport, offering diverting views in all directions. Marksmen take aim at Waco Skeet & Trap, also near the airport. HOT Dog Park on Steinbeck Bend Drive gives dog parents a place to connect while their canine companions enjoy romping around the grassy expanse. On the hottest days, aquatic adventures beckon at Hawaiian Falls Waco, a 10-acre waterpark featuring tube slides, body slides and a wave pool.

The way to Waco Regional Airport
At Waco Regional Airport, travelers connect to major hubs like Dallas Fort Worth and Houston without the hassle of driving several hours. Since this is a small airfield, its convenient location outweighs other concerns. “I have not had one person that I’ve sold to complain about airplane noise,” Reed says. “It’s small planes taking off, and it’s not 24-7.” North Lake Waco is 5 miles from downtown, an easy drive along M.L.K. Jr. Boulevard. Since Waco Transit System buses don't travel past Lake Shore Drive, this is a car-dependent community.

Uncle Worm’s in the big red barn
It’s tough for motorists to miss Uncle Worm’s Texas Cuisine, a roadside bar and restaurant encamped within an apple-red barn. The smoked ribeye is tasty either on its own, or crowning a bed of romaine with smoked corn relish and crispy jalapenos. Jon Lillies Steakhouse, tucked within a nearby strip mall, is lauded for comfort food like loaded spuds and chicken fried steak. Daily and weekly specials on fried catfish and steak fingers distinguish the menu at Griff’s, which also serves breakfast. The closest H-E-B is in Cameron Park on North 19th Street.

Racking them up at Lakeside
It takes some time for the eyes to adjust to the dim lighting at Lakeside Tavern, especially after stepping out of the hot Texas sun. Fortunately, the friendly staff at this neighborhood bar is quick to offer icy bottles of beer, complete with koozies to help keep them cold. Patrons shoot pool and trade stories, and everybody knows each other. “It’s like Cheers in the country,” Reed says. There’s nothing on tap here except for the chilled pickle shots, a local lip-puckering libation made from vodka and pickle juice. Lakeside occasionally hosts live outdoor music on weekend nights.
On the banks of Lake Waco
Lake Waco is prone to flooding during heavy rainfall, particularly in winter and spring. Recently, area parks and campgrounds were temporarily closed due to high lake levels and flooding. Waco is also in a tornado-prone region of Texas, where the twister risk is already higher than the national average.
