Luxury-living on Maui's coast

Located just 5 miles south of Kihei is Wailea-Makena, a lavish beachfront neighborhood rich in high-end properties and state-of-the-art attractions. Famous for its posh hotels, premium golfing and comparatively pricey real estate, this edge of Maui feels decidedly refined. “It’s one of the most luxe communities on the entire island of Maui,’ says Adam Miller, resident and Realtor with the Nine Times Network team of Real Broker. “It’s where Jeff Bezos bought his compound and where Steven Tyler of Aerosmith has made a home for decades.” Wailea-Makena provides resort community living with a sense of privacy and exclusivity.

Multi-million-dollar estates line the coast

Homes lie west of Hawaii Route 3, dotting along the major thoroughfares of Okolani and Wailea Alanui Drive as they curve along the coast. Both condos and single-family homes populate the beach in gated neighborhoods or on magnificent golf greens. Residents enjoy manicured lawns with gardens and water features on a palm tree-studded landscape. Residents live full or part-time at Wailer Fairway Villas on the 11th fairway of Wailea’s Blue Course; no vacation rentals are allowed. In the optimally elevated Keala O Wailea, residents enjoy sweeping ocean views and an opulent pool within walking distance of shops, golfing, tennis and restaurants. Condos, on average, range from $1,000,000 to $3,500,000, while single-family homes range from $1,000,000 to $6,000,000. Waterfront homes with over 3000 square feet and more than an acre of land can garner as much as $10,000,000 to $15,000,000.

Activities on the beach and beyond

Wailea-Makena features beach after beach along its approximately 10-mile coastline. Residents enjoy more than seven beaches from north to south, including Kamaole Beach Park III, Wailea Beach and Makena Beach. Kamaole Beach Park III, known to locals as Kam III, is one of three popular swimming and boogie-boarding spots along Kihei and Wailea. Runners enjoy the Wailea Beach Path, a 1.5-mile boardwalk along the sea in the community’s resort area. The Makena Beach shore juts into the ocean toward a destination sought by divers worldwide for its spectacular marine life. From Little Beach or Makena State Park, locals can boat to Molokini Island to snorkel in the Molokini Crater. This natural crescent is one of only three volcanic calderas in the world and Hawaii’s only island marine sanctuary. Here, residents can swim with a rainbow of exotic spotted and striped fish amid staggering coral formations. Just south of Wailea-Makena is the Ahihi-Kinau Natural Reserve Area, where hikers can trek through lava fields on the Hoapili Trail. Golfers can play a round at the world-class Wailea Golf Club and Makena Golf and Beach Resort, which offer top-notch courses with breathtaking Pacific Ocean views.

The Shops at Wailea

Hosting Tiffany, Prada, Gucci and Louis Vuitton, the Shops at Wailea offer some of the area’s most premium retail. Restaurants like Pint and Cork Gastro Pub also populate the shopping center, featuring classic pub eats and a happy hour from noon ‘til 5 p.m. Monkeypod Kitchen serves farm-to-table Hawaiian fare and cocktails in a relaxed, gloss-wood ambiance. The Restaurant at Hotel Wailea is a lesser-known gem. “Most people don’t know about Hotel Wailea here,” says Miller. “It’s a great, adults-only getaway. And the Restaurant at Hotel Wailea makes for a spectacular anniversary or special event date night. Right next door is one of the best bars on Maui, The Birdcage, known mostly to locals." For groceries, Foodland and Costco are located in central Maui. For choice produce, fine meats and spirits, locals can peruse the isles of Island Gourmet Markets at the Shops of Wailea.
