Neighborhood in Maryland
Frederick County 21793
Walkersville, a western Maryland town about 6 miles from Downtown Frederick, is rich in history, community spirit and a multitude of housing options.
Remnants of Frederick’s once-essential industrial lime kilns dot the countryside around Walkersville, and a railroad museum pays homage to when the town was a stop on the Frederick and Pennsylvania Line Railroad. This is a community where local government service is often a family affair, volunteering with the fire department is a badge of honor, the fireman’s carnival in the summer is the social event of the season, and league night is a regular occurrence at Walkersville Bowling Center.
The definition of small-town charm, here you will find early 20th-century houses in Victorian Stick style along Main Street. Residential streets in the center of the town gradually wind toward established neighborhoods with ranch- and split-level style single-family houses. Some of the town’s farm views that lingered on the horizon have given way to subdivisions with modified colonials and farmhouses. But working dairy farms like Glamourview Creamery and Knollvue Farms, cherished for their picturesque barns, original homestead houses and acres of wide-open spaces, still line the outskirts of Walkersville.
In town, house hunters can find a vintage 1920s colonial for $400,000 to $450,000. A neighborhood split-level house lists for about $425,000 to $450,000. A three-bedroom condo built in the 1970s sells for $280,000 to $300,00, while a three-bedroom town house from 2023 costs about $700,000 to $725,000. Estate-style homes on the outskirts of town go on the market for $800,000 to $850,000
Despite the increased residential development over the last several decades, large commercial and retail outlets are few and far between. Discovery Crossing Shopping Center on Woodsboro Pike hosts small storefront restaurants and service businesses like laundromats and eye care centers. The nearby Village Tavern serves casual pub fare for lunch and dinner, and Azteca Bar and Grill makes Mexican meals. A Safeway in Walkers Village Shopping Center takes care of grocery needs.
Young learners attend Glade Elementary School, which takes its name from a local creek. The school receives an A grade school from Niche and hosts a PTA that helps raise money with an online product store. Kindergarten through fifth grade students may also go to Walkersville Elementary School, which receives a B+ grade from Niche.
Sixth through eighth grade students participate in art and music programs at Walkersville Middle School. The school, graded B by Niche, offers a career and technical education program that includes courses in food service and life skills. Teens go to Walkersville High School, which is noted for its championship football, track and tennis teams. Niche gives the school an overall grade of A-.
The Walkersville Southern Railroad Museum on Pennsylvania Avenue lets you take a trip through time with its vintage rail cars. The rail travels along the Walkersville-Frederick line of the former Pennsylvania Railroad, hosting special events and charter train rides.
Heritage Farm Park, a historic farm and its 1850s Greek Revival house and outbuildings, is listed on the Maryland National Register of Properties. The surrounding land contains a golf course, trails and rentable community garden plots. The park’s playing fields are home to the Glade Athletics Association but can be used by the public when not reserved for the association’s teams. Fountain Rock Park and its nature center are among the county’s first environmental parks. Hiking trails, a deck-lined quarry and old lime kilns spread out over the park’s 22 acres.
