About 15 miles from downtown Boston in west Waltham, Cedarwood is a residential neighborhood bordered by Brandeis University. The community’s mix of New England-style homes spirals out from the Cunningham Circle cul-de-sac at the tip of Cedarwood Avenue. A walk through the area reveals well-kept front lawns, shaded by maples that shed piles of colorful foliage in the fall. Route 20 and Interstate 95 flow around the edges of the neighborhood, providing quick access to the shopping, dining and cultural attractions throughout the city. “The location makes it an attractive place to live,” says Sara Dalicandro, a longtime resident and Realtor with Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Commonwealth. “You can find a little bit of everything in Cedarwood.”

Cedarwood’s namesake park, water recreation and golf clubs
At the southern tip of the neighborhood, the Cedarwood Playground serves as the primary community gathering spot. Its hills provide opportunities for sledding in the winter, and along with a jungle gym, it also has fitness stations and a 1-mile trail. Walkers can enjoy the paths and lawns on the grounds of Brandeis University next door. Numerous brooks and ponds dot Waltham’s map, though the Charles River and its waterside parks bring in the most traffic. Hikers, fishers and boaters can access the river and its trails via Auburndale and Fox parks or the Upper Charles River Reservation. Open, forested terrain next door in Weston provides conservation land for hiking and space for numerous golf courses. The Weston Golf Club and Pine Brook Country Club both sit within 3 miles and feature courts for racquet sports, as well.

Proximity to big-box shopping and Moody Street nightlife and dining
With Route 20 and Interstate 95 flowing nearby, shops and restaurants are accessible within minutes. Market Basket and Hannaford are both within a couple of miles in small shopping centers, and Costco and Home Depot sit a bit farther north off I-95. While Main Street has casual eateries, like Domenic’s and Steve’s Pizza, most of Waltham’s restaurants operate off Moody Street. A collection of dining spots with outdoor patio seating and late-night bars line its sidewalks. Popular options on Moody include the Vinotta Restaurant for Italian and Bistro781 for American fare. Waltham attractions and Cedarwood Neighborhood Association events
Waltham is known as the “Watch City,” as it housed the country’s first watch factory, built in 1854. The Waltham Museum celebrates this history with watch-making lessons and exhibits. Other attractions nearby include Brandeis University’s Rose Art Museum. Free to the public, the museum displays rotating exhibits from both students and professional creatives.
While the city has plenty of activities for tourists, Cedarwood offers smaller, community-centered events. The neighborhood association hosts annual yard sales and picnics at the playground. Residents also come together during the holidays for a Halloween parade and Christmas caroling.
Navigating Cedarwood’s public transportation and interstates
While Cedarwood is walkable within its boundaries, most people get around the city by car. Interstate 95 runs along the western border of the neighborhood, and Route 20, which leads to Interstate 90, heads toward downtown Boston. Commuters can hop on a Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority bus off Cedarwood Avenue or Tavern Road. “There’s a ton of bus stops in the area; a perfect location for commuters,” Dalicandro says. The commuter rail also takes off from the Brandeis/Roberts and Waltham stations along the Fitchburg Line. Hundreds of both international and domestic flights take off from Boston Logan International Airport, about 17 miles east. With I-95 and I-90 access, this drive can take under 25 minutes without rush-hour traffic.
