Stained glass in the window of Made In Warren on Main Street in Downtown Warren is artful.
From former village to a creative enclave
Today, Warren is known as a coastal city, but its history dates back to when it was the homeland of the Pokanoket, a band of the Wampanoag that played an essential role in the town's early development. When Roger Willaims, the founder of Rhode Island, was banished from the Massachusetts Bay Colony, he fled to the outskirts of Warren. A Pokanoket woman named "Margaret" nursed him back to health, an event marked by Margaret's Rock & Cave at the edge of Chance Farm. Since this origin story, Warren has transformed into a community with a small, but vibrant downtown area. Locals gather on Water Street to enjoy Happy Hour at one of the many breweries or dine at restaurants serving seafood. Downtown Warren also attracts creatives with its art studios and galleries. "There's a bunch of old historic buildings that have been renovated into new spaces, and because of that, it's become a hub for artists, craftsmen and local businesses," says Allison Dessel, a Realtor and Rhode Island native. "The art scene is definitely something you'll notice when you're here. We've got all these antique shops and live-music events — there's even classes for things like glassblowing." The neighborhood is also under a 15-mile drive from Providence, the state capital. Dessel says that while art and history are two major components of the area, it's the community that makes living in Downtown Warren special: "It's so diverse and friendly. You've got all sorts of people, and everyone is welcoming. You can tell people genuinely love where they live."
A cup of chowder at Blount Clam Shack is the perfect light lunch or afternoon snack.
Eating seafood at Blount Clam Shack
Local businesses make up the bulk of shopping and dining options in Downtown Warren. Bookstores, coffee shops and art studios are on every corner. Dessel, a self-proclaimed foodie, believes some of the best restaurants in Warren are located on Water Street. "I have old-school recs and new-school recs," she says. "The Wharf is a classic — I've been going there since I was a kid. It's right by the water, and the food is always delicious. They also recently had an amazing renovation." For a relatively newer option, Dessel recommends Blount Clam Shack. "The shack opened more recently, but the family has been in the seafood business for generations. It's a great experience. It's all outdoors, so you can drive or boat there!" There's also Blount Clam Shack & Market, which sells fresh seafood year-round. Tom's Market is the go-to for groceries, but Dessel says residents can also head into Barrington or Bristol for bigger supermarkets.
A mix of business and residential life makes the Water Street in Downtown Warren appealing.
Late 19th-century architecture
Homes in this area are influenced by late 19th-century architecture. Cape Cods and colonial-inspired designs are some of the most common styles. Along Main Street, houses are positioned closely together with modest yard space. Moving east of Downtown Warren, lot sizes increase, since they are further from the city's center. "There are old historic houses, but also condos and apartments," notes Dessel. "You've got a mix of single and multi-family properties; it just depends on the area." There aren't sidewalks, but residents still walk or bike to get around. Prices start at around $315,000 for a four-bedroom home and can reach up to $850,000 for waterfront properties.
The Mount Hope High School in Bristol serves the Bristol-Warren School District.
A shared school district
According to Dessel, students in Warren and Bristol share a school district. Hugh Cole Elementary enrolls over 500 students from PK-5, with a student-teacher ratio of 13 to 1. The school is considered a Feinstein Learning School, part of a Rhode Island initiative to encourage community service. Niche rated the school a B-minus overall. Kickemuit Middle has nearly 700 students enrolled in Grades 6-8 but and receives a B overall. Mount Hope High enrolls over 900 students in Grades 9-12. Its marching band participates in the Fourth of July Parade every year. The high school receives a B-minus overall.
Enjoying the sun at Warren Town Beach is great for anyone taking a walk or just relaxing.
Enjoying the sun at Warren Town Beach
For some time in the sun, residents head to Warren Town Beach, located south of the neighborhood. Although the beach is on the smaller side, locals enjoy the more secluded and peaceful experience it offers. Visitors can observe boats sailing in and out of the harbor, people paddleboarding, and children scouring the sand for seashells. Plenty of trees are around, making the beach ideal for hot summer days. There are two green spaces within a mile walk away: Burr's Hill Park and Jamiel's Park. They offer amenities such as a playground and picnic benches, but the best place for enjoying the outdoors is the Audubon Nature Center. Here, locals can explore over 28 acres of greenery, such as meadows and mashes. The center even has an aquarium and museum. The nature center is also connected to the Easy Bay Bike Path, a 15-mile trail that runs through East Providence, Warren and Bristol.
Meet Your Maker Winter Market at Hope & Main in Warren hosts local products to sample and buy.
Memorial Day Parades and Art Festivals
"There's always events going on!" Dessel exclaims. The Memorial Day Parade occurs annually, starting on Warrensville Road and ending at the Municipal Complex. After the ceremony, attendees head to the American Legion Post for refreshments. In September, the Warren Quahog and Arts Festival takes place at Burr's Hill Park, providing the community with live-music performances, opportunities to purchase paintings and crafts. The art is paired with fresh seafood, such as lobster rolls.

Downtown Warren is right by State Route 114, which takes residents into Bristol and Newport. The TF Green International Airport is 21 miles away via I-95. Public transportation options include bus lines operated by the Rhode Island Transportation Authority (RIPTA). The East Bay Bike Path is another option for commuters — locals take this route to get to East Providence and Bristol.
