Suburban Neighborhood in Warwick, Rhode Island
Kent County 02889
Removed from some of the more bustling parts of central Warwick, the neighborhood of Conimicut-Shawomet is valued for its relaxing lifestyle. For starters, the entire east end faces the Providence River, providing waterfront homes and little scenic parks for quiet time. Also, unlike the parts of Warwick closer to T.F. Green Airport, there aren’t major interstates running through Conimicut-Shawomet, making it more of a place that people seek out intentionally, rather than pass through. “Neighborhoods like this in Warwick are for people who want to escape bigger city traffic, or who generally want more freedom in terms of their buying power,” says Stefanie Carr, a Realtor with Lila Delman Compass.
There are several renovated styles here, spanning a range of prices. In the mid $300,000 range, expect to find late 19th century bungalows, placed on a street with homes of a similar scale. The setting is suburban, but with various commercial corridors running through, ensuring trips to restaurants or the post office are quick. In the upper $400,000s buyers will start to see contemporary Colonials from the late 1990s. With open layouts conducive to entertaining, there are modern features on these properties, like a master bedroom suite with multiple closets. With properties sitting on nearly an acre, the setting isn’t quite rural, but a version of suburbia that feels more rustic.
Sherman Elementary enrolls 300 children from Kindergarten to fifth grade, and keeps a student-teacher ratio of 15 to 1, helping it to receive a B from Niche in the teachers category. Warwick Veterans Memorial Middle School is a large junior high, with over 1,000 students enrolled in grades 6 to 8. Yet students still get close attention with a student-teacher ratio of 12 to 1, helping to school to receive a B-minus from Niche in the academics category. Pilgrim High is equally as big, enrolling over 1,000 students. It earned a B-minus from Niche in the clubs and activities category. The cheerleading, ice hockey and soccer teams all won division championships in 2019. Residents also have access to the Conimicut Branch of the Warwick Public Library, which is known for its coziness: inside this small library you’ll find a fireplace and a crafts table for kids.
While Conimicut-Shawomet isn’t filled with grassy parks, the waterfront is where locals go. Try visiting the Rock Avenue Waterfront Public Access Point for peaceful moments along this rugged stretch of coast. The Walter C. Santos Scenic Overlook is a bit more polished, featuring a new wooden deck.
When it comes to dining and entertainment, West Shore Road is the main drag. Restaurants lean towards comfort food and limited seating, giving them the air of an intimate neighborhood spot frequented by locals. Sunrise Café is one such spot, known for serving creatively named breakfast dishes like the Bohemian Benedict in an old school diner setting. At Grainsley’s Kitchen and Drinks, find hungry locals ordering pizzas like the Angry Hawaiian, which features bacon, pineapple, jalapenos and a spicy habanero drizzle. Plus, to explore more of the dining scene, or simply access a big grocery store like Dave’s Fresh Marketplace, the amenity-rich thoroughfare of Warwick Avenue passes right along the west end.
Quiet and scenic, Conimicut-Shawomet is for those who want a slower pace of life without being removed from conveniences.
