With big plans in the imminent future, there is no better time to call Barry Farm home. Located in the rapidly growing southeast quadrant of D.C., Barry Farm is in an area with “a ton of development and opportunity coming quickly,” says Evan Marbury of Compass Realty. The heart of Barry Farm is less than a mile from the Fredrick Douglass Bridge, the site of the Bridge District, a project to transform 100 acres of land into a hub for dining, shopping and more. The project will bring national grocery chains to the area while being the epicenter for local dining options in the southeastern part of D.C.

Housing options in Barry Farm range from detached ranch-style homes to high-rise condos. Many of the detached homes feature fenced-in front yards, great for gardening, but you will have to find parking on the street as driveways are rare. These homes typically sell for around $200,000, while two-bedroom condos start at $120,000 and three-bedroom units are just under $300,000. “There is great equity potential in the area if you are looking to purchase,” says Marbury. The location and proximity to D.C. make Barry Farms ideal for residents who work in the city. “We’re right across the bridge from the city and so close to the Metro, it makes it easy to get to work.”

Residents gather for fitness and fun at the Barry Farm Recreation Center. Open six days a week, the recreation center features a full indoor pool with lanes, in addition to a leisure area with slides and diving boards. The fitness rooms are perfect for those who want to get a cardio workout or pump some iron, and the game area is great for kids to play ping pong or foosball. Locals come to shoot hoops on the indoor and outdoor basketball courts, and the multipurpose synthetic field is the home to many youth football and soccer games. The Barry Farm Recreation Center also has a playground for younger kids, as does the Savoy Playground area.

Children in Barry Farm will begin making their way through the District of Columbia Public School System at Savoy Elementary, which features a 10:1 student-teacher ratio. Next up is Kramer Middle School where students participate in the Read 180 program, which helps the children become proficient and skillful readers. Finally, students will attend Anacostia High School, which underwent a full renovation in 2012, including a new media center and gymnasium. Feeding into Anacostia High is Excel Academy. This K-8 public school for girls develops young women to prepare them for the future.

Walking distance from Barry Farm is Merry’s Kitchen. Merry’s serves up popular Chinese-American dishes like lo mein noodles, chop suey, and hot and sour soup. Down the street is MLK Deli which boasts the MLK King Club, a massive sandwich with turkey, ham, bacon, pepper jack, King sauce and more. They also offer up stuffed salmon and specialty hot dogs. Shark’s Fish and Chicken is a local chain that locals love for fried fish platters. Just a couple of miles away is the Skyland Town Center, home to Halfsmoke, which features jambalaya, fried chicken and baby back ribs.

The same shopping center that holds Halfsmoke is home to Starbucks, Tropical Smoothie Café and more recognized and trusted national chains. Grocery shoppers can stock up for the week at the Lidl in Skyland Town Center or head across the street to Safeway for even more options. For quick, convenient shopping, Stanton Supermarket is within walking distance from Barry Farm and has essentials such as milk and cereal, as well as cleaning supplies and toiletries.
