Neighborhood in Washington, District of Columbia
District of Columbia 20020
In a world where location is key, you can’t beat Fairlawn. On the eastern banks of the Anacostia River, Fairlawn is in the southeast quadrant of D.C., and in the heart of a rapidly changing area. The neighborhood sits squarely in the Bridge District, a 2.6 million-square-foot project that will bring retail and restaurants that partner with local businesses to celebrate D.C.’s rich history. “The goal has always been to connect both sides of the river,” says District of Columbia Council Communications Director Julia Jesse. “It’s overdue and going to bring so much value to the southeast side of town.” With direct access to Anacostia Park and the Washington Nationals stadium, it’s clear Fairlawn is the place to be.
The types of homes in Fairlawn range from two-bedroom condo units priced around $260,000 and ranch-style single-family homes just under $400,000. The neighborhood also features multi-story row homes and fully detached brick Colonials in the ballpark of $570,000. Multi-unit investment properties are available for about $900,000. Many of the houses feature small, fenced-in yards and mature leafy trees provide shade to those walking along the wide and flat sidewalks. Parking on the narrow streets will remind you that you are in the big city, but there is plenty of green space for pets to run around.
Children in Fairlawn begin at Boone Elementary as part of the District of Columbia Public School System. A PK3 school, Boone offers pre-kindergarten programs to children aged three and older, “not having to worry about daycare takes a lot of weight off new parents in the area,” says Jessie. Students move on to Kramer Middle School, which offers smaller class sizes and mentorship programs before heading to Anacostia High. AHS provides paid and unpaid internship opportunities, as well as college and career counseling.
Right on the western edge of the neighborhood lies the giant 1,200-acre Anacostia Park. With plenty to explore on land and water, the park is a hot spot for locals all year long. One of the most popular attractions is the Pirate Ship Playground where kids can climb and swing from pirate-themed equipment. Stroll down the waterfront walkway or roll over to the roller-skating pavilion where you can rent a pair of skates and grove to the sounds of a local DJ. For those who prefer to take to the water, the park provides ramps for boats and piers for fishing. The nearby Anacostia Recreation Center offers an outdoor pool, as well as basketball and tennis courts. Locals also love to cross the Anacostia and take in a ballgame as Nationals Park is just two miles away.
For a hearty breakfast out, Tony’s Place has you covered. Open daily for breakfast and lunch, diners can score corn beef hash in the morning or stop in for a burger in the afternoon. Locals have been heading to Mario’s Pizza House since 1936 for crispy crust and fresh toppings. While you can’t go wrong with the pizza, the cheesesteak is the menu’s hidden gem. Call ahead or sit and the bar and enjoy orange chicken or spicy baby shrimp from Wah Sing. With the Bridge District bringing in many more restaurants, the choices in Fairlawn will be endless.
Many locals enjoy the convenience of stopping by neighborhood staples such as Good Hope Deli and Market or Marbury Market for their daily needs. For a more expansive selection, Safeway and Lidl are just over one mile away at Skyland Town Center. Grocery stores and large retail chains are also expected to be involved in phase one of the Bridge District. For high-end, Capitol Hill is just a short Metro ride away.
