Making the most of the name "Friendship Heights"
Luxe retailers, fitness studios and residential spaces mingle in Friendship Heights, a densely populated neighborhood on the Maryland-D.C. border. Small businesses mixed with friendly neighbors create a community culture that lives up to the name. The neighborhood has been long known as a shopping destination, but the Friendship Heights Alliance has been working to make it a welcoming place for people to live, as well. “People who have lived here for a long time remember the period when it was the place where you’d shop for fancy clothes for celebrations,” says Natalie Avery, the group’s executive director. “Now, it really is shifting more towards a more neighborhood-y feel.” Some of those initiatives include emphasizing community events, working to ensure the area is walkable, and creating more spaces for residents to get together.

A premier shopping destination
Most of the retail and dining options are clustered in shopping centers near the Friendship Heights Metro Station. While the retail tenants at the shopping centers have fluctuated, other stores along Wisconsin Avenue have served the neighborhood for decades. “Rodman’s is such a treasure,” Avery says of Rodman’s Discount Gourmet grocery store. “You can get everything, from your watch fixed to some obscure international foods." The retail outlets in Friendship Heights range from high-end fashion like Bloomingdales, to discount shops like Marshalls, to local boutiques like Sheyla Vie, which sells women’s clothing.
Friendship Heights residents also have several restaurants and bars to choose from. Alley Cat restaurant and bar is a popular gathering place, serving kabobs and cocktails in a dim, elevated-dive atmosphere. The Heights Food Hall is an upscale food court that features a variety of food stalls manned by local chefs showcasing their unique cuisine. Coffee Nature is a welcoming neighborhood café that serves the typical range of espresso drinks and a wide variety of teas.

Urban location with a suburban feel
Housing in Friendship Heights is a mix of luxury condos and elegant single-family homes. Along Wisconsin Avenue, a major thoroughfare that bisects the neighborhood, multi-use developments perch upscale condos above ground-level retail stores; down the connecting streets, the area quickly takes on a residential, almost suburban atmosphere. Leafy trees surround brick houses that passers-by can observe behind wooden fences. Some streets have densely huddled row homes, while others are populated by stately colonials. Prices reflect the desirability of the neighborhood: A 1-bedroom condo may start at around $400,000, while a 4-bedroom Colonial-style house with a yard will cost close to $2 million.

“An interesting walk” along Wisconsin Avenue
One focus of the Friendship Heights Alliance is to ensure that the neighborhood is welcoming to pedestrians. “There are a lot of aspects to look at as far as safety, but we’re also asking ‘how do you make this an interesting walk?’” Avery said. To that end, the organization has started a planter program that includes 70 planters along the central corridor that are refreshed twice a year, as well as a community art program that has already created three murals. Beyond walking, residents can access several bus stops on Wisconsin Avenue, and two Metro stops – one at the northern tip of the neighborhood, and the other on the southern end – served by the Red Line. The emphasis on walkability helps to mitigate concerns about traffic and parking in the shopping district.

Create and learn at the Friendship Heights Makers Market
The Friendship Heights Alliance emphasizes community pride and togetherness with ongoing events and festivals. The group’s summer series includes a vibrant street festival and cultural arts walk. Chevy Chase Pavilion is used as an art gallery and cultural space, hosting the work of local creators. The Friendship Heights Makers Market & Street Festival occurs twice a year, when organizers close a portion of Wisconsin Avenue and local artisans can their craft goods, musicians from all over the Beltway perform and dance instructors host impromptu classes. The Third Thursdays series invites residents to come together and learn a new skill or learn about an unfamiliar topic. Past events have included plant workshops, panel discussions, and cooking classes.
Children in Friendship Heights love the playground at the Chevy Chase Recreation Center.
Green spaces for outdoor recreation
The Chevy Chase Recreation Center offers plenty of opportunities to get active, including tennis courts, baseball fields, a dog park and a splash park. Western Grove Urban Park offers a more low-key experience with nearly 2 picturesque acres of paved walking paths, water fountains and an activities course. Fort Reno Park, home to the highest point in Washington, D.C., hosts live music at an outdoor concert stage during the summer. The park also features a community garden, tennis courts and a baseball field.

I've lived here for 8 years. It's ok, it gives me access to both the suburban and city life. You can go to some of the best stores in the area, or take the Metro practically anywhere in the DMV. It's a short drive from Bethesda and Tenleytown, making it easy for kids to go to great schools. Safety wise, there aren't a lot of robberies that happen here. Nightlife, there are a lot of drunk adults, who think they are cool but really they just wake up the older people.
