A borough and a township share similar amenities

Washington, a small-town community in northwestern New Jersey, comprises two distinct areas: Washington Township and the smaller Washington Borough. Established in 1849, Washington Township predates the independent incorporation of Washington Borough in 1868. While each has unique school districts and histories, they share similar amenities. Located just 12 miles from Phillipsburg and Hackettstown and 31 miles from Allentown, both communities offer a slower pace of life and a rich history. Nestled amid rural farmland, Washington features several creeks, providing access to country clubs, mountainous parks and preserved natural areas. Its 19th-century history is shaped by vital transportation routes, including the former Washington Railroad Station and Morris Canal, active from 1831 to the late 1870s. “I have lived here for 30 years, and I love it. It’s so warm and welcoming. It’s very open with lots of farmland, and you’re centralized to Philly and New York,” says Lori Finnegan, Treasurer of the Washington Community Garden for the last 15 years.

20th century front porch living and new constructions

Surrounded by rural farmland, Washington is a pocket of life amid the greenery. Along West Washington Avenue are colorful glimpses of the early 1900s in Victorian homes painted in bright yellows, muted blues, and sage greens. These homes feature big front porches and ornate facades on rectangular lots close to one another, complete with sidewalks, driveways, and attached garages. Street by street, ranches and cozy Cape Cods are within walking distance of schools, shops and parks. Home prices span from $285,000 for fixer-uppers to $650,000 for brand-new contemporary styles.

Quaint downtown and small-town shopping

Washington's downtown is a walkable district featuring breweries, art galleries, and local small businesses. Muheisen's Bagel & Deli, a popular spot for breakfast and lunch with no indoor seating, is known for its friendly service. The Smashed Olive offers a sit-down atmosphere with a Mediterranean-inspired, farm-fresh menu sourced locally and Lost Ladies Grill serves homestyle cooking. Although big chain stores are limited, residents have access to Park Avenue Consignment Boutique, Two Country Chicks for home goods and Get A Grip & More, the local hardware store. Grocery options include The Meat Shoppe by Arctic Foods, El Pacheking for Latin-American finds and ShopRite. For more extensive shopping, residents can travel 12 miles to Phillipsburg, where big-box stores like Target and Lowe's are available.

Join the Washington Community Garden

Washington Township and Washington Borough residents have various recreational choices—golfers can tee off at Fairway Golf Club or Hawk Pointe Golf Club. Roaring Rock Park, nestled atop mountainous ridges, draws locals with its babbling Brass Castle Creek, offering hiking and trout fishing against its rocky terrain. Adjacent to Oxford Furnace Lake, the Lake Marguerite Wildlife Refuge unveils vast forested wetlands featuring elevated footbridges for exploration. Pohatcong Native Arboretum on Mine Hill Road presents whispering maple, birch and alder trees adorned with sculptures and an art gallery. Meadow Breeze Playground is the go-to spot for neighborhood kids, and for those with a green thumb, the Washington Community Garden has fresh herbs, fruits, and veggies from rented plots, enjoyed during communal picnics. “The garden is wonderful, it's our little secret. We make sure to give back to our local food banks,” Finnegan says. “I love the people we meet and making connections, I would never leave.” In the summer, the Washington Borough Pool becomes a sought-after destination with a seasonal fee and is surrounded by sports courts.
