If you're looking for acreage while maintaining an easy commute to Anchorage, North Lakes might be your next new neighborhood. "The vast majority of residents here work in Anchorage," says Realtor Richelle Killian with Keller Williams Realty Alaska Group. "You can hop on Parks Highway and get to work in just over 30 minutes. It's also a great place to buy acreages without being as pricey as Anchorage."

Homes here offer a little elbow room, so it's easy to spread out and build a small homestead. You'll primarily find established ranchers and ramblers mixed in with cabin-like split levels and estates on vast plots of land. You'll also find waterfront homes on the lakes, so you can get out on the water whenever you like. Homes here typically offer a half-acre up to three acres of land, which may sit on spacious meadows with mountain views or dense evergreen forest. Prices here range from $235,000 for a rambler to around $450,000 for a split level and $700,000 for a larger estate or lakefront home. Typically, the more acreage your new home has, the more expensive the sale price might be.

The Matunuska-Sisitna School District serves students in the area, with both Larson Elementary School and Cottonwood Creek Elementary School serving Pre-Kindergarten through fifth grade. "Schools in the area are well-rated, which is another big draw for those moving out of Anchorage into the Wasilla area," adds Killian. At Larson Elementary School, rated above average for test scores on Great Schools, students can participate in various extracurriculars like Art Club, LEGO Club and Chess Club. Cottonwood Creek scores above average for both test scores and student progress on Great Schools and provides students with various activities. The extracurricular programs here include Chess Club, Math Olympiad and Science Olympiad. At Teeland Middle School, which serves grades six through nine, students test average according to Great Schools. The school supports students with their Study Hall program and Math Lab. Colony High School is ranked above average for test scores and college readiness on Great Schools and serves grades nine through 12. The school offers college readiness counseling, scheduling college visits, offering SAT prep courses and providing financial aid and scholarship assistance.

In addition to the acreages you can buy here, you're close to numerous outdoor recreation opportunities, with nearly a dozen lakes to choose from. Head to Wasilla Lake for boating, swimming, kayaking and winter ice fishing. Newcomb Park sits on the lake's shores, offering picnic-perfect green spaces, walking trails and a playground. Kings Lake is another favorite for residents within the area. You can camp here, go hiking, swim or take out a kayak on the lake to go fishing. You're also just twelve miles from the Alaska State Fairgrounds, where you can camp out and walk over to the Fair each day of your trip for a fantastic staycation.

One of the biggest perks of the community is how secluded and tranquil the area is, but you're not far from daily necessities. You'll find the central commercial hub at the intersection of Parks Highway and East Palmer-Wasilla Highway. Get groceries at Fred Meyer, stock up on decor at Target or get your pet supplies at the local Petco. There are primarily fast-food restaurants in the area, but some locally owned favorites include Hacienda Mexican, a choice for platters of tacos, and E Lu Fa, a go-to for Chinese takeout. In Downtown Wasilla, you'll find several microbreweries, like Last Frontier Brewing or Bearpaw River Brewing Company.

With its spacious home offerings, well-rated schools and easy commute to Anchorage, you can almost have it all in North Lakes.
