Harrison has lakeside serenity, mountain views and small-town amenities
Western Maine Mountain views and idyllic lakeside living are what residents of Harrison are used to. The rustic village is bordered by Long Lake and Crystal Lake, making swimming, power boating and trout fishing daily activities. “There was a big population growth during the pandemic because people wanted to get out of the city,” says Lois O’Connor, the broker and owner of Sunset Lakes Real Estate, who has sold several homes in the area. “The town can still be a bit busier during the summer with people who only stay for the season, but it really is a year-round place.” In addition to ample water recreation, locals can catch a performance at the cabin-style Deertrees Theatre, enjoy a lakeside meal on Main Street or hike the 300-acre Crooked River Preserve.
Early 1800s country estates and lakeside properties
Harrison’s inland roads are filled with custom-built country estates dating back to the 1800s. Rambling Cape Cod farmhouses sit on lots ranging from 10 to 100 acres. Log cabins have four to five bedrooms, and contemporary-style dwellings built within the last five years are tucked behind towering hemlock trees. Long Lake and Crystal Lake are surrounded by restored Colonial Revivals and midcentury ranch styles on half-acre lots. These properties typically have private beaches or boat slips. “People tend to hold onto the lake houses for a while, so they’re sought after,” says O’Connor.” They can sell in less than a month.” Buying a house in Harrison typically costs between $500,000 to $1 million, a range higher than a Main home’s average $400,000 selling price.
Long Lake beach boating, Crystal Lake swimming and Deertrees Theatre Entertainment
While waterside residents are the only ones with Long Lake beach access, a public boat ramp on Main Street makes it easy to drop an anchor and swim or fish from the vessel. Harrison Marina and Gateway Marina, on the same thoroughfare, offer boat storage and rentals. Swimmers will find a public beach at Crystal Lake Park, where they can relax on the sandy shore or jump off the floating dock. With trailheads starting on Scribner’s Mills Road, Crooked River Preserve’s evergreen-shaded terrain offers ample activity for hikers, bikers, snowshoers and cross-country skiers. The namesake river is also home to one of Maine’s four indigenous populations of landlocked salmon, making it a popular place for anglers. Skiers will find even more activity at Pleasant Mountain’s 40 trails 11 miles west.
From a former deer run to a filming location for “White Christmas,” Deertrees Theatre has combined Harrison’s natural beauty with local artistry since 1936. Today, the 350-seat venue presents over 40 productions a year, with past performances including “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” and a Beatles cover band. Classical music connoisseurs can see the Sebago Long Lake Music Festival here every Tuesday night in July and August.
Oxford Hills School District has a unique pipeline
Children in Harrison can attend prekindergarten through second grade at Waterford Memorial School, which has an overall B-minus grade from Niche. C-plus-graded Harrison Elementary is where they may go until sixth grade when they start at C-graded Oxford Hills Middle. Lastly, they can go to Oxford Hills Comprehensive High School. Lending to its B-minus grade, the school partners with the University of Maine to offer an Outdoor Leadership Pathway for those who intend to study post-secondary subjects like kinesiology or forestry.
Local brews, century-old restaurants and lakeside dining are all available on Harrison’s Main Street
Foodies will find a few locally owned establishments along Main Street. For instance, The Barking Chicken has Maine-made beers on tap and an art gallery filled with work from Harrison artists. Located in a renovated building from 1923, Olde Mill Tavern serves steak and seafood in its cozy interior. Lobster rolls, Italian sandwiches or hand-tossed pizza can be enjoyed at the Village Tie Up, a lakeside restaurant and boat rental hub. Long Lake Creamery next door opens every summer, scooping flavors like butter pecan and rainbow sherbet. While the Harrison General Store along the thoroughfare provides a few essentials, the Food City and Hannaford, about 5 miles south along Bridgton’s Portland Road, have a more comprehensive grocery selection.
Driving to different New England metropolitans is easy in Harrison
Harrison’s rural roads and lack of public transportation make it a car-dependent area. Luckily, Maine Route 35 spans the town’s core, and a 40-mile drive south on the highway leads to Portland. Drivers can also go 30 miles west on U.S. Route 302 to reach New Hampshire metropolitans like Conway.
