English garden-style neighborhood near Downtown Baltimore

Three miles north of Downtown Baltimore, the city begins transitioning from a bustling metropolis into the charming, English garden-style neighborhood of Oakenshawe. A thoughtfully landscaped neighborhood developed in the early 19th century, Oakenshawe, a national historic district, was originally billed as an oasis away from city life. It holds true to that lifestyle today, while just steps away from Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore Museum of Art and busy thoroughfares full of shops and restaurants. "It's one of those gems of a neighborhood," says Azam Khan, real estate agent with Long & Foster, who has been selling homes in Oakenshaw and other Baltimore neighborhoods since 2000. "You have these beautiful old rowhouses with thriving trees in this sort of urban environment without feeling like you're downtown."

Historic rowhouses with beautiful greenery

Oakenshawe's historic narrow streets feature three- to four-story redbrick rowhouses characterized by colonial architecture with gray slate roofs and wood sash windows. These details are often fully or partially concealed by mature trees and bushes that line the neighborhood sidewalks. Rowhouses typically have small, shaded backyards and quaint front yards with a stoop that leads to a covered front porch. While street parking is the norm, some rowhouses have detached garages accessible through a back alleyway. Some residents have even transformed their backyards into driveways. Most rowhouses offer around 1,500 to 2,500 square feet of living space with four to six bedrooms, selling for around $450,000 to $500,000. Oakenshawe has a few streets with enchanting, single-family Colonials, Victorians and English cottages that have been well-preserved since the early 1900s. While not as common, these historic homes add character to the neighborhood and may or may not come with driveways. Homebuyers interested in one of these single-family homes can expect to spend anywhere from $500,000 to $750,000.

Walk to shops and restaurants in Charles Village

"It's a special neighborhood because it's strictly residential, but you can walk a block or two and be where all the restaurants are," Khan says. Tree-lined sidewalks allow residents to enjoy peaceful strolls around the slow-paced neighborhood. The sidewalks lead to busy roads full of shopping and dining options just on the outskirts of Oakenshawe in Charles Village where Khan used to live. Restaurants with outdoor seating are common, including Bird in Hand, an inviting coffee shop and bookstore. Tamber's is another local favorite – a 50's-style diner with a twist on American and Indian dishes. "Tamber's has been around for decades," says Khan. "It's an essential part of the community." Residents can get their groceries from Charles Street Market and find fresh products at the Waverly 32nd Street Farmers Market every Saturday.
