East end of Weirton

The Greenlawn Estate neighborhood has large homes on bigger lots on the eastern side of the northern Western Virginia panhandle city of Weirton. “When you compare this neighborhood to others in Weirton, it’s more white collar,” says Jim Arehart, a Realtor with Century 21 Greathouse Realty. “You’ll find more expensive homes here.” This neighborhood is only a couple of minutes from the Pennsylvania border. Weirton is unique because the city stretches about 5 miles from east to west, with the western border being the Ohio state line and the eastern border being the Pennsylvania state line. “It’s the only city in the country that does that as far as I know,” Arehart says.

Greenlawn Estate home prices are higher than the median

Most of the homes in the community range between $150,000 to $400,000. “Because of lower taxes in West Virginia, people are attracted to neighborhoods like this and Weirton in general,” Arehart says. Split-level, ranch-style and a few contemporary houses built within the past 20 years. Most houses were built in the mid-20th century. Large lot homes are typical, ranging from a third of an acre to almost 2 acres, and many are at least 2,000 square feet, larger than most homes in Weirton. There’s low inventory in this neighborhood and throughout Weirton. “Those who want to downsize are holding on to their homes. They’ll get top dollar, but they’ll also pay top dollar for a new house,” he says. The neighborhood ranks a 3 on the CAP crime score index, just below the national average of 4. Nearby houses of worship include Sacred Heart of Mary Roman Catholic Church and Mercy Baptist Church.

Weirton rebounding

In much of the 1900s, Weirton was an active steel community. That started to vanish in the 1980s. “That was really the low point for Weirton,” says Rachel Keeney, the executive director at Top of West Virginia Convention and Visitors Bureau. “In the last 10 to 15 years, there have been several new shopping plazas, and recently, large manufacturers have come to the area.” A couple of instances of that are companies that have, or will, occupy old steel mills. Form Energy is a battery manufacturing facility in the former Weirton Steel mill that opened in 2024. They are expanding and plan to employ 800 people by the end of 2025. The former Cleveland Cliffs steel mill still had a tinplate facility that closed in April 2024. That will be repurposed as a transformer production plant opening in early 2026.
