Weirton's winding main road for shopping and dining
Pennsylvania Avenue may share a name with the state that defines the easternmost edge of Weirton. But the city’s major thoroughfare is firmly on the West Virginia side of the state line and has the distinctive businesses to match. From a modest movie theater and the city’s public schools to varied restaurants and service offices, life on Weirton’s east side courses through slopes and curves in the city's hills. “You’ve got all the restaurants and stores there, and it’s 20 minutes out from Pittsburgh,” says Lisa Hensley, a Realtor and broker with Howard Hanna Mortimer Realty. Hensley has sold homes nearby for more than 20 years, and points to the all-American small town feel as a draw for newcomers.

Pennsylvania Avenue is one of Weirton’s retail and restaurant corridors. The Weirton Shopping Plaza near Penco Road is home to the Shop ‘n Save grocery store and Goodwill Weirton for gently used clothes and home goods. In one corner of the low-slung shopping mall, the Plaza Theater is located in a small moviehouse screening new first-run pictures. Varied discounted items are also available at America’s Wholesale Outlet. Heading northeast on the main road, Dollar General is available for everyday needs around the house, while Little Critters Pet Shop offers supplies and services for dogs, cats, rats, fish and more. Contemporary farmhouse décor and wood-lined display walls set the tone at The Best You Boutique, a shop for women’s fashions and accessories.
Locals can satisfy the mind and the sweet tooth in one stop at Prime Ice Cream & The Weirton Book Company, where soft-serve desserts and new fiction releases have accompanied each other for more than 30 years. Barb’s Stateline serves all-day diner fare on weekdays and brunch on the weekends. The chalkboard menus at The Coffee Bean Cafe & More list a broad lineup of espresso drinks. Vocelli’s Pizza is a popular Pittsburgh-area chain offering pies for delivery and takeout. Dragon Palace is a staple for casual Chinese eats to go, while Koi Asian Cuisine has sit-down service for Chinese, Japanese and Thai dishes.
