River living at it's best in Golden Beach Md.
A haven for boaters, water lovers and military personnel
Golden Beach is a private community that sits on the banks of the Patuxent River. While some homes feature waterfront views and private docks, others enjoy large acreages with plenty of room for boat storage. Local beaches, piers and boat ramps are for residential use only. “Golden Beach is a nice little community with water and beach access,” says Sarah Swann, a Realtor with Baldus Real Estate Inc., who grew up in the area and has been selling real estate locally for the past eight years. “It’s minutes away from local shopping and dining areas and attracts military personnel who work at Pax River Naval Air Station about 30 miles south.” Andrews Air Force Base and the Dahlgren and Indian Head naval support facilities are all about the same distance, says Chris Norris Jr., broker-owner of Topside Realty. Now in his 13th year of selling real estate, Norris grew up in Leonardtown, about 20 miles south of Golden Beach, and knows the area well. “Military people come to this area for training and never leave,” he says. “That says a lot about how beautiful the Western Peninsula of Maryland is.”
Private beaches, piers and boat launches in Golden Beach
People who call Golden Beach home can enjoy beautiful sunrises on Long Point Beach, the farthest point east in the community on the Patuxent River. Parking, picnic tables and a pavilion are all available to residents with a beach sticker. Main Beach, accessible from Beach Drive, is the longest stretch of sand, approximately 1,000 feet. For kayakers, Trent Hall Pier is a good spot to launch because it is near the calm waters of the adjacent marsh. Small Beach has a playground, basketball courts and Benson’s Pier, a place to fish and crab. Boat ramps are available at each beach except Main Beach.
Golden Beach has privately managed beaches and amenities for its residents.
Golden Beach has its's own private piers for visitors, fishing, or kayak launching.

Homes with views of the Patuxent River
Most homes in Golden Beach are single-family houses on a third or more acres of land. Waterfront homes often feature back porches with beautiful views of the Patuxent or Indian Creek, which feeds into the Patuxent, and private boat docks. They are also the most expensive, listing from $600,000 to $950,000. Brick and wood-framed colonial styles, most with attached garages, sell in the middle range from $350,000 to $600,000. Ramblers, two-level homes with split foyers (where the entrance is between floors) and split-level homes on two levels are the most common. They’re priced between $200,00 and $450,000. “This is a mixed community with starter, mid-life and retirement homes,” Swann says. “People choose Golden Beach for its affordability, especially military personnel who work at the local bases. Many have bought multiple lots together and put a house on one.” Most homes in the community were built in the 1970s or before and go on the market fully renovated. “Most properties are turn-key,” Norris says. The few in need of repairs or updating are priced to sell.

Fireworks at Dusk, a Golden Beach tradition
The community’s Independence Day parade and festival, Fireworks at Dusk, is held on the Saturday before the Fourth of July. Cars decorated red, white and blue make their way down Golden Beach Road, with riders throwing candy to those watching the parade. Awards and trophies are given for Miss Golden Beach and the best-in-class vehicles in the parade, including the most patriotic. Dune buggies, classic cars and pet goats have also been known to participate in the parade, which ends at the pavilion on Beach Drive, where the community can enjoy food. Fireworks start at dusk.
Shores and eateries in Charlotte Hall
People entering and leaving Golden Beach pass through the Charlotte Hall shopping district on State Route 5. There’s a Food Lion and Wright’s Country Market, which specializes in cured meats and sausages. Local eateries include Big Boy Tacos, which serves authentic birria and other Mexican favorites. The Old Line Restaurant and Pub offers beer, burgers and salads, and The Foxy Fish, farther down Route 5, is a popular seafood restaurant. Charlotte Hall also has chain restaurants like Arby’s, retail shops like Snead’s Ace Home Center, and small businesses like Hooks and Hangers II, a community thrift store. “The area is growing, too, and is due to get more retail, like a Chick-fil-A and Starbucks,” Swann says. Major shopping malls are 15 to 20 miles away, Norris says, like the St. Charles Towne Center in Waldorf, which features a Macy’s and over 100 other nationally recognized stores, and First Colony Shopping Center in California, with big box stores like Lowe’s, Target and Walmart.

Students may attend Margaret Brent Middle, which also earned a B, and high schoolers can finish at Chopticon High, a B-minus school,. The College of Southern Maryland also has several regional campuses in nearby towns, the closest being Hughesville.
Golden Beach is only 3.5 miles long from east to west. Golf carts are allowed on roadways because it is a private community that is off the main road with little to no outside traffic. Walking to riverfront amenities is less than a mile for those living within the Beach Drive area. Biking is also a good option for others who live farther “up the hill” or away from the river. State Route 5 is the nearest highway, connecting Golden Beach to destinations along the Western Peninsula, including the Pax River Naval Air Station, a 30-mile ride south, or Washington, D.C., a 45-mile commute north. STS Transit buses follow this highway, too. A commuter lot is positioned where Golden Beach Road meets Route 5, and buses take commuters as far south as Ridge and north to D.C. The closest hospital is CalvertHealth Medical Center in Prince Frederick, about 20 miles east across the Patuxent River.
Golf carts are the preferred method of travel inside Golden Beach.
