Mountains, lakes and more surround Weldon
Encircling portions of Lake Isabella and branching out to the north, east and southeast of the lake, the Weldon neighborhood sits on the southeastern tip of the water but its reach expands into the mountainous Sierra Nevada portions of the region. With a rural atmosphere, small-town feel and plenty of outdoor amenities amidst its peaks and waters, Weldon’s spot in southern California offers its residents plenty to do, and it wouldn’t be rare to come across some friendly cows grazing in its fields. "It's in the mountains, right by the lake,” says Autumn Mitchell, a Realtor and real estate executive with Tobias Real Estate. “It's kind of remote, country living and the views are real pretty. There’s a whole bunch of little communities and smaller towns up there."
Spacious landscape with spread-out homes
The housing in Weldon primarily consists of older mobile homes, ranches and an occasional Cape-style construction, with prices ranging from about $80,000 to $300,000. Other homes have recently sold for within the $500,000 range, though it depends on the area the residence is located in Weldon. “Newer, bigger homes go for over $180,000,” Mitchell says. “Houses tend to range from smaller ones at $180,000 to most over $250,000.” Homes in the area may also have wider driveways for RV parking or an awning over parking for vehicles, typically with fences around the perimeter, and some are located on larger lots as well.

Hiking, fishing, camping and much more outdoors
With its varied topographical features, there’s no shortage of opportunities to get outdoors in Weldon. The Audubon Kern River Preserve is located just east of Lake Isabella, run by the National Audubon Society and offering trails in the Kern River Valley. Plenty of varieties of flora and fauna can be found on the one-mile trek, which is self-guided and draws close to the river’s South Fork. "There's a lot of campgrounds and hiking trails,” Mitchell says, “not just in Weldon, but in the Kern River Valley. The Kern River runs down the North Fork and into the lake. There's a lot of camping, hiking and equestrian trails, areas to fish and there’s an off-road vehicle area near Weldon with trails.” The South Fork Wildlife Area also features hiking trails along with opportunities to go canoeing, fishing and hunting.

Visit Sierra Vista restaurant in Weldon.
Few Weldon eateries, but many nearby
Just off of Highway 178, on the outskirts of the South Fork Wildlife Area, is the Sierra Vista Restaurant, the area’s main eatery. A local favorite, Sierra Vista hosts events and is open four days a week. For other local fare, residents will likely have to head to either the northern or southern ends of Lake Isabella to eat out – to Kernville or Lake Isabella, respectively. Paul’s Place General Merchandise is also located off the highway and has been in business for more than 80 years, offering groceries including canned goods and ice cream to its customers.
Bakersfield an hour’s drive away
Highway 178 is the most prominent thoroughfare in Weldon, nearly bisecting the neighborhood and running along the northern side of its main residential area. Carving its way between the homes and the two most prevalent parks, 178 is split into two segments. The western half runs from Bakersfield to close to the Trona Pinnacles, a notable geological attraction in the Searles Lake Basin, while the eastern half begins close to Death Valley and extends to the Nevada State Line. Via 178, Weldon residents can reach Bakersfield within about an hour.
