Liberty Heights Park is emerging as a center for events and entertainment on the eastern side of West Allis. Parks, restaurants and shopping centers host regular activities, all within a short walk of historic homes on quaint residential streets. This lively energy, however, is not something that has always existed in the neighborhood. "The east side of West Allis was kind of neglected in years past, but now it's somewhere that you want to build on and keep going in," says Ray Turner, Alderman for District One of West Allis. "In fact, some of the west side partners are a little jealous about what we've been doing here in the east."
The average home value in the Liberty Heights Park neighborhood is $227,084.

New breweries and coffee shops in old warehouses
The name Ope! Brewing Co. pokes fun at midwestern friendliness, but its friendly atmosphere is genuine. Visitors can bring their own food or order outside at the rotating food trucks, and dogs are welcome inside and out. The brewery was an old warehouse that takes advantage of features like open floorplans and garage doors rolled open in the warmer months. "West Allis is unique because we have all these old industrial buildings made into something new without losing any of their charm," says Suzanne Singh, neighborhood services specialist for West Allis.
Market Square Shopping Center and West Allis Towne Center have grocery stores and a few fast-food chains. Still, locally owned restaurants and coffee shops are what the people of West Allis are about. "Some chains wanted to open up in the area, but they couldn't last long because the locally owned spots were taking all their business," Turner says. Lake Effect Coffee, another new spot in an old building, is popular for morning coffee or an afternoon pastry. The owner rides a bike with a cart of cold brew coffee attached to the back, stopping at the farmers' market, concerts and nearby parades.

The West Allis Farmers Market
West Allis Farmers Market is more than just a place to buy local produce or shop for handmade goods. The Parks and Recreation Department brings games for kids to play with, and local organizations set up booths for involvement opportunities. One event that has gained traction after only two years is the West Allis-West Milwaukee Back to School Bash. Each school runs a table, and food trucks and musicians are there throughout the last Wednesday of the summer. "It's a big outdoor welcome party," says Superintendent Dr. Tarrynce Robinson. "The first year, about 600 people showed up, and last year the attendance was up to 1,500." Students who attend receive a free backpack donated by local businesses or individuals.

High demand for homes and apartments
Construction in Liberty Heights Park peaked in the 1920s and 1930s. Bungalows, Cape Cods and small Tudor Revivals make up most of the single-family homes, while Victorian cottages are often duplexes, sometimes called "two-flats" by Realtors. Single-family and multi-family homes fall within the same price range of $130,000 to $340,000. The median price of homes is $240,000, well below the national average, and houses last on the market for an average of two weeks. Apartments are also popping up in old warehouses. "They're being filled, so clearly they're needed," Singh says.
