More than just the large park in its center
The large green space in the middle of McCarty Park is a major draw to the neighborhood, but it's the beautiful homes, nearby amenities and connectivity to West Allis and Milwaukee that make for incredibly quick-selling homes. Most of the neighborhood's gridded streets lead south to McCarty Park, one of the city's largest parks with the most to offer. Colorful leaves cover lawns as fall comes, and homeowners rake them into piles to be collected by the city. Though the area is densely packed with little space between each yard, McCarty Park has a calm suburban atmosphere. Tudor-style houses with brick facades and Cape Cods with dormer windows line the streets and reflect a small-town charm. "Conversations are happening within each community, and we're trying to cultivate building up where one lives," says Steve Schaer, the manager of planning and zoning for the City of West Allis. "We want to highlight the charm and history of each neighborhood."
McCarty Park residents enjoy close access to peaceful green spaces and walking trails.

Seasonal swimming and long bike rides at McCarty Park
The neighborhood namesake, McCarty Park, is in the center of the area, surrounded by residential streets that overlook its 52 acres. A twisting waterslide leads into the park's public pool, open seasonally from May to September. The park also has a fishing pond, baseball diamonds, tennis courts and a playground surrounded by walking trails. The paved paths are on the Kinnickinnic Line of the Oak Leaf Trail, a 135-mile-long multi-use trail maintained by the City of Milwaukee. Honey Creek runs through the park and is prone to flooding. The area around the park, and streets at the bottom of rolling hills, occasionally see water after heavy storms or snow melting in spring. The Kinnickinnic River Parkway is accessible by the Oak Leaf Trail and is two miles from the neighborhood. Trails wind around the river, and when deep in the trees, it's easy to forget the parkway is in a major city since any developed areas are out of sight.
Residents of McCarty Park live an active lifestyle with plenty of trails and green spaces.

Houses last only a week on the market
Bungalows, ranch-style homes, Colonial Revivals and Cape Cods make up the single-family homes in McCarty Park. The houses, built between 1930 and 1980, sell between $215,000 and $325,000. Homes sell right around the Milwaukee Metro average, lawns are an average size for the city – about one-fifth an acre – and houses have an average number of bedrooms. However, the homes sell significantly faster than average. Lasting only one week on the market, much of the houses' attraction and desirability comes from their condition and curb appeal. Brick and stone facades, mowed lawns, flowerbeds and contrasting shutters give the neighborhood a storybook look, while wide roads and well-maintained sidewalks provide space for walking and biking. Skinny driveways lead to detached garages and backyards with just enough space for patios, sheds or an above-ground pool. Some duplexes and muti-family homes are on the gridded streets, ranging between $240,000 and $315,000.
McCarty Park homes are quaint and cozy, and are nestle amongst the trees.

Highlighting small businesses and family restaurants
Many locally owned and family-run restaurants are along the streets bordering McCarty Park. "We are always looking for opportunities to support creative and original businesses," says Mayor Dan Devine, who is in his fourth mayoral term for the City of West Allis. "We have chains in the city, of course, but we love the restaurants and creative spaces." Michael's Family Restaurant is a classic American diner serving burgers, sandwiches and steak dinners. For pizza and pasta dishes, locals stop into Capri di Nuovo. The family-owned Italian spot is known for its pasta entrees, topped with cheese that crisps up in the oven. Markets and small grocers, like Rupena's Fine Foods, are in surrounding neighborhoods, but the area's most extensive shopping for groceries, housewares and apparel is west of Interstate 41. Big box stores like Target, Menard's and The Home Depot are along South 108th Street, alongside many fast-food chains.

A short drive from the best parts of the city
Beloit Road is along the neighborhood's southern border and is a main thoroughfare intersecting West Allis on a diagonal. The road leads 8 miles northeast to downtown Milwaukee and 2 miles southeast to Interstate 41 on-ramps. Interstate 41 leads north to Interstate 94 and south to Interstate 43, two of western Wisconsin's main highways that provide accessibility to the Greater Milwaukee area. Aurora West Allis Medical Center is one of the largest employers in the area and is only 1 mile west, in Eckel Woods. "It's so easy to get around West Allis," says Mayor Devine. "We are 10 to 15 minutes from everything, whether it's the lakefront, professional sports, theaters, shopping or dining." Buses stop along the eastern and northern borders, South 67th Street and West Lincoln Avenue. Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport is less than 10 miles away.
Centennial celebrations at Franklin Elementary
In the past few years, West Allis transitioned back to having zoned neighborhood schools rather than offering school of choice. Most students attend Franklin Elementary School, rated a C-plus by Niche. The school is less than a mile northwest of McCarty Park and celebrated its 100th year in May 2024. The celebration had inflatables, food trucks, yard games and crafts for the community to enjoy. Frank Lloyd Wright Intermediate is rated a C, and Central High School is rated a C-plus. The high school is even closer to the neighborhood than Franklin Elementary, and many older students walk or bike to class.
Franklin School supports a nurturing learning environment that allows students to thrive.
Central High School earned a B- rating from Niche.

The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
