An exclusive community known for its extensive landscaping and high-end status
Llewellyn Park is one of the most unusual suburbs in all of New Jersey. This gated community claims to be the oldest of its kind in America, with celebrities counted among its residents. “Whoopi Goldberg lives there; it’s very exclusive, very high-end,” says Kimberly Latortue, Realtor with Weichert Realtors. It’s nearly 20 miles from Manhattan, and it even inspired Central Park, which is about double the size of this 425-acre development. Thomas Edison’s sprawling estate, built in 1880, still stands in the middle of the neighborhood and is open to the public.
Neighbors reach out to each other and host get-togethers, especially around holidays. Some newer homes have been installed recently, and with Interstate 280 wrapping around the western side, there’s an element of modernity to this neighborhood otherwise crystallized in time.

Victorian, Tudor and colonial homes with contemporary styles in between
Exclusivity comes with a higher price tag, but also premium amenities. “You’re often going to be looking at million-dollar properties,” says Latortue. “It comes with security and events throughout the year. There’s a guard who lets you in.” Indeed, the brownstone tower that serves as the gatehouse was a design choice made by Llewellyn Solomon Haskell, who founded the neighborhood in 1857.
Nearly 200 homes populate Llewellyn Park, so stock is limited. Some of them have views of New York City. Many reflect Victorian tastes from the late 19th century. Buyers will see Tudor homes, colonial-inspired homes and assorted mansions in a country style. But there are contemporary styles mixed in, such as large modern traditional homes. Yards can easily be an acre. Occasionally, homes can sell for $750,000, but most land in the $900,000 to $2.8 million range.
Llewellyn Park was founded in 1857 by Llewellyn S. Haskell, a New York businessman.

Eagle Rock Reservation has views of Manhattan
True to its naturalistic name, Llewellyn Park is known for its exceptionally lush landscaping, with classics like daffodils, but also exotic species from South America and Asia. Walking paths are lined with gas lanterns, and in the middle of the neighborhood is the Ramble, a 50-acre parcel with open space, walking paths and streams. The neighborhood’s northern tip also joins Eagle Rock Reservation, one of the biggest outdoor attractions in the area. The reservation provides hiking trails with views of Manhattan and places to picnic. Visitors who want to refuel after exploring the park can swing by The Highlawn, an upscale restaurant on site that also has city views.

Small, locally owned eateries surround the neighborhood
Main Street passes by the front of the neighborhood, giving residents immediate access to the dining and retail options in downtown West Orange. Small, locally owned shops like Supreme Bakery add a boutique feel that’s right in line with the neighborhood’s village aesthetic. Super Supermarket near the bakery provides fresh produce and packaged goods.
By following Main Street north toward downtown Montclair, diners will find other locally owned options like Folklore Artisanal Taco, a cozy space with bright décor. Llewellyn Parq Bar & Grill is a few steps away, offering creative comfort food. Bloomfield Avenue in downtown Montclair is only two miles farther north, and this walkable strip is packed with eateries that serve vegan, Southern and Cuban cuisine. The Montclair Book Center is a vast space lined with gently used tomes and vinyl records. “It’s not a sleepy place,” says Daniel Buchsbaum, Realtor with Berkshire Hathaway. “A lot of people from Brooklyn have moved there.”
Super Supermarket is a wonderful resource for fresh produce nearby Llewellyn Park.

Immediate access to Interstate 280 and commuter trains
While residents have retail destinations close by, there's also alternative transportation. Main Street is lined with bus stops, but perhaps more importantly, the Orange Train Station in downtown West Orange is merely a mile away. Commuters can take the M&E train for a 40-minute trip to Penn Station in New York. Drivers can hop on Interstate 280, which forms the western side of the neighborhood. It takes about an hour to reach Manhattan by car.
