History and a cozy Main Street near Downtown West Orange
Tory Corner is one puzzle piece in the collection of small suburbs that sit south of Montclair, New Jersey. The role it plays? The Revolutionary War neighborhood. Tory Corner’s name refers to a monument at Main Street and Washington Street describing British loyalists who settled the area. But there’s an urban element to this historic neighborhood. “Tory Corner is the neighborhood that’s going to put you closest to Downtown West Orange,” says Kimberly Latortue, a Realtor with Weichert Realtors. Small businesses are the backbone of Downtown West Orange, and neighborhood staples contribute support, like Schneider Hardware, which celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2023. But newer, trendier businesses are popping up, and in 2022 the mayor began considering a tax credit for a film studio interested in setting up shop. Actor and comedian Whoopi Goldberg lives in neighboring Llewellyn Park and helped with negotiations.
Tory Corner's historic colonial-inspired homes
The triangular parcel of Tory Corner features quiet residential streets named after trees, like Chestnut Street and Maple Street. A few of these streets are blocked off to traffic, thanks to cul-de-sacs giving only one way in and out. This walkable environment includes a lot of colonial-inspired homes, many built in the 1910s and 1920s. They feature varying degrees of urban and suburban elements. For example, some properties forgo a yard altogether and instead have a stoop directly meeting the sidewalk. Others have a small strip of grass out front decorated with ornamental hedges. On some stretches, like Ashwood Terrace, taller mature trees are interspersed. Prices range from $400,000 to $638,000.
Many homes in Tory Corner were built in the 1910s and 1920s.

Small businesses create a local feel on Main Street
The Tory Corner monument marks the spot where British loyalists used to gather at a tavern. But the dining scene today is more forward thinking, with few references to wartime history. There are various cozy South American eateries, plus trendier places. Light Bulb Coffee Shop, for example, nods to inventor Thomas Edison’s influence over the area. The bright shop features plenty of seating. Americana Diner is a retro experience with chrome seats lined up by a lunch counter. Willow & Olivia Dessert Café makes custom cakes but also has everyday offerings, including cookies, cupcakes and banana pudding. For a big-box experience, though, residents will have to drive – but not far. Many people consider this part of West Orange an extension of Montclair, whose walkable downtown on Bloomfield Avenue is less than 4 miles north. Whole Foods is available for groceries, and a global array of restaurants can be sampled.
