55-plus resort-style living

The gated 55-plus community of Baywinds is geared toward seniors seeking an active lifestyle. Centered around a spacious clubhouse and bordered by serene wetlands, this palm tree-lined community offers quiet, resort-style living less than 10 miles from downtown West Palm Beach. From backyard barbecues to annual pool parties, the community stays busy. “Baywinds has a laid-back atmosphere, but people move here for all the things to do,” says 13-year resident Debra Keife, a Realtor with United Realty Group. Grocery stores and restaurants are right down the road, and two golf clubs are within a few miles of the community. “The only thing you won’t find here is children under 19 — although grandchildren visit often,” Keife says. Residents also have easy access to festivals throughout the year at the South Florida Fairgrounds. Medical offices are nearby, and the HCA Florida Palm West Hospital is about 6 miles away.

A central clubhouse full of amenities

The clubhouse, the community’s recreational epicenter, is often busy. “We have Zumba and water aerobics classes, and people play bocce and pickleball,” Keife says. Two pools and a hot tub overlook a paved lakeside walkway, and the surrounding grounds have space for tennis and shuffleboard. The community’s various clubs, which include everything from the Theater Arts Group to the New York Club, often gather in clubhouse meeting rooms. Performances take place regularly on the ballroom stage. There’s also an on-site library, a billiards room and a fully equipped gym. Golfers have two courses within a few miles, including the public 18-hole Village Golf Club and the private Breakers West Country Club. Breakers West, which is also a wildlife sanctuary, is home to the award-winning 18-hole Breakers Rees Jones Course.

Spanish-style homes with waterfront backyards

The community includes single-family homes, attached villas and Mezzano condos. Although there are 12 models of single-family homes, the styles complement each other with similar Spanish and Mediterranean touches, such as clay tile roofs and stucco exteriors. Baywinds’ sidewalk-lined streets snake around peaceful reservoirs, meaning most homes have waterfront backyards — some also include screened-in pools. Two- and three-bedroom properties with less than 2,000 square feet range from $330,000 to $500,000, while larger homes cost between $500,000 and $800,000. Villa homes have similar aesthetics and come with a one-car garage. These roughly 1200-square-foot units range from $330,000 to $450,000. Condo units, which include access to another small pool, cost between $230,000 and $350,000. Hurricanes are possible here, and flood insurance is highly recommended. Residents also pay a monthly Master Association fee and may be responsible for a separate monthly or quarterly fee from their subdivision's association.

Bimini Twist serves upscale seafood

Just outside the gates is a shopping center that's home to Publix Super Market, salons and a dentist’s office. Diners often head across the street to Bimini Twist, an upscale seafood spot with a modern, woodsy interior. Portside is a local favorite for scratch-made breakfast and lunch fare, while the Original Mario the Baker is known for its authentic New York-style pizza. Morgan’s Country Kitchen, operated by local owner Patti for more than a decade, offers dependable weekly specials like pot roast on Thursdays. Additional shopping centers along North State Road 7 include everything from Target and a Regal movie theater to Walmart, Burlington and The Home Depot.

January brings the South Florida Fair

The clubhouse hosts regular community events, including trivia nights, music bingo and comedy shows. The nearby fairgrounds come alive during the annual South Florida Fair, a January tradition since 1912 with carnival rides, local food and live music. The fairgrounds also host themed events throughout the year, including antique festivals, craft fairs and holiday celebrations.

Palm Tran serves the area

Although the community is walkable, venturing outside its gates usually requires a car. Okeechobee Boulevard provides a direct, 9-mile route to downtown West Palm Beach, where drivers can hop on Interstate 95. The trip takes about an hour by bus. Palm Beach International Airport is about 8 miles away.
