An established neighborhood with plenty of life
Northwood Shores is one of West Palm Beach’s oldest communities, a draw for its lush landscape and warm weather since the beginning. The tropical, coastal atmosphere here still attracts development, just as it did during the community’s late 19th-century roots. This neighborhood is a blend of old and new, where nostalgia coexists with the contemporary along the South Florida shore. “It’s old Florida and it’s ready to rise up,” says Barry Gutknecht, a local realtor with Douglas Elliman. “It’s still an old Florida neighborhood, with no gates or HOAs or anything.”
Cozy single-family homes juxtaposed with sleek high-rise condos
Most of the Northwood Shores area is made up of single-family homes, some of which date back to the 1920s and many of which were built across the mid-20th century. It’s a mix that gives the area a pastoral feel, accentuated by the dense collection of palm and oak trees that shade its streets. These homes are situated cozily close to each other and connected by a network of sidewalks that grease relationships between neighbors. “People that live there love it there,” says Gutknecht, who has lived in South Florida for roughly a decade. “They do get to know each other walking around.”
Mediterranean and Craftsman bungalows are common architectural styles seen around the majority of Northwood Shores, with square footage between 1,000 and 2,000. Bigger homes fill the area’s waterfront, along Flagler Drive and facing a sliver of the Intracoastal Waterway. That includes some high-rise condo buildings, too. Some modern options are squeezed around the established ones here, too, a sign of the bubbling current of development happening here. “Northwood Shores is one of the last historic neighborhoods that have not been landmarked,” says Lisa Mastronardi, a local realtor with Illustrated Properties, who has been in real estate in the area for some 15 years. “So you have a mix of old and new homes — many of them stunning and unforgettable.” There are some studio and one-bedroom condos in Northwood Shores that sell for prices in the $100,000s, while some of the biggest and most extravagant units can top $1 million. Single-family homes in the neighborhood usually have price tags from just under a million to around $3 million. The area’s crime score of 8 ranks above the national average of 4, according to the CAP Index.

A cornucopia of flavors, within arms reach
Northwood Shores may be mostly residential, but it runs adjacent to a bustling commercial corridor between 23rd and 25th Streets. That area is loaded with restaurants, representing myriad cultures. Simmer Down Bar & Grill is popular for Jamaican food, right down the street from Malakor, a hotspot for Thai. And Agora, a street over, serves up flavors from the Mediterranean. Tina’s Market, next door to Simmer Down, is a spot to grab quick foodstuffs. There’s also a Whole Foods Market just a few miles away by the 450,000-square-foot Tanger Outlets, which has everything from Bath & Body Works to a Nike Factory Store. Multiple houses of worship are among this area’s conveniences as well — the neighborhood is home to Palm Beach Moravian Church and Temple Beth El, a synagogue.
