Proximity to nature in Oregon’s “Silicon Forest”
About 700 miles up the coast from Silicon Valley is a region sometimes called “Silicon Forest,” a concentration of high-tech companies like Apple, Google and Intel on the outskirts of Portland, Oregon. Raleigh Hills is a Silicon Forest-area neighborhood about 6 miles from downtown — considering the quick commute, it’s not uncommon for residents to work in the tech industry, putting down roots in million-dollar new construction and mid-century ranch-styles. Long before the invention of the microchip in 1958, Raleigh Hills was defined by its association with The Portland Golf Club. The course, known for its hilly terrain, has hosted both a Ryder Cup and a PGA over its century-long history. Directly north, residents can escape from the world of putting greens and high-tech neural mapping in Forest Park, a 5,000-plus acre Tualatin Mountains wildlife refuge with more than 80 miles of hiking and biking trails. “Raleigh Hills has almost a rural feeling even though you’re inside city limits,” says Kate Ferrand, a senior library assistant at the Garden Home Community Library and Raleigh Hills resident. Streets are lined with decades-old trees, and residents walk their dogs along heavily shaded sidewalks. “There’re a lot of families living here,” says Ferrand, adding that the extensive local park system provides plenty of opportunities for outdoor recreation.

Mid-century ranch-styles on quiet cul-de-sacs and contemporary new construction
Raleigh Hills is made up of approximately 6,200 homes with varying prices. To the south, townhomes and single-family investment properties near Garden Home Park can sell for under $500,000. Prospective buyers will also find updated mid-century ranch-styles, bi-levels and tri-levels shaded by trees on quiet cul-de-sacs for between $600,000 and $800,000. Lot sizes are around ¼ acre, sidewalks on either side of the street add to walkability and two-car garages are common. Elsewhere in the neighborhood, a 1950s-era estate with a backyard swimming pool and guest quarters can sell for upwards of $1.5 million. Contemporary homes built within the last few years generally surpass $1 million, and sometimes even top $2 million. “The fact that it’s so forested makes it feel like you have more room between neighbors,” says Ferrand, adding, “It gives everyone privacy. In general, it makes it feel less like you’re in a city.”
A dual language program at Beaverton High School
Students living in the northernmost part of the neighborhood can attend public schools like Raleigh Park Elementary, which has its own learning garden, and Whitford Middle. Both earned an A from the educational review site, Niche. Older kids head to Beaverton for High School, which received a B-plus. Farther south, public school options include Montclair Elementary, which Niche gave an A, and the A-minus-rated Southridge High. Beaverton High stands on the site of the former Beaverton Public School, which opened in 1875 and only had one classroom. Today, students in ninth through 12th grade receive Chromebooks and the BHS’ dual language program offers rigorous academic programming in both English and Spanish.
Swimming, racket sports and hiking opportunities
In Raleigh Hills, most neighbors are within walking distance of a park, recreation center or golf course. There’s the Raleighwood Wetlands Natural Area, where visitors can spot blue herons, and belted kingfishers as they walk alongside Johnston Creek. There’s also the Raleigh Swim Center, which is open during the warmer months and located next to the Raleigh Park Pickleball & Tennis Courts. Outdoor workout equipment is available at Vista Brook Park, and kids love the nature-themed playground at Camille Park — both are connected by the Fanno Creek Trail. Of course, there’s always the Portland Golf Club at the center of the neighborhood. The members-only facility was established in 1914, and annual fees include pool access, raquette sports and yearly social events. There’s also RedTail Golf Center farther south. Residents can drive to walk their dogs at Forest Park, which spans over 5,000 acres next to the Willamette River. Wilwood Trail is 30 miles long, making it ideal for committed hikers.

A decades-old farmers market in Beaverton
On Saturday mornings (except during the months of December and January), Raleigh Hills residents can stop by the Beaverton Farmers Market across from the Beaverton Library. It’s been going strong since 1988 and draws close to 20,000 visitors on some summer weekends. Shop for everything from microgreens to raw honey while listening to local musicians perform live.
The Garden Home Community Library hosts a family storytime twice a week, and “We also team up with the Garden Home Rec Center on cultural events,” says Ferrand, adding, “We’ll often give away books at those.” Families enjoy visiting the elephants and polar bears at the Oregon Zoo in Washington Park, strolling through the Portland Japenese Gardens nearby, or admiring the towering trees in Hoyt Arboretum. There are always more opportunities in Downtown Portland. Buy tickets to watch touring Broadway shows or A-list comedians at Keller Auditorium, attend a film screening at the Portland Art Museum or try a new restaurant. “Portland is a foodie city,” says Alex Roy, a Southeast Portland local and Realtor with John L. Scott Real Estate; there’s always a new vegan joint, pastry shop or ramen pop-up.

Plenty of grocery options and ‘Northwest-style pub fare’
There are multiple grocery options scattered throughout Raleigh Hills — Trader Joe’s lies to the south near the Garden Home Recreation Center and community library. There’s also a separate location in the Beaverton Town Square Shopping Mall. North along Southwest Oleson Road find the first-ever location for New Seasons Market, a Pacific Northwest Chain known for stocking locally-sourced products. Imported goods from Japan, China, Korea, Vietnam, India, Indonesia and the Philippines are sold at Uwajimaya Beaverton and, just across the street, run errands at big box retailers like Target. Residents have plenty of fast food chains to choose from along South West Beaverton Hillsdale Highway like McDonald’s and Jack in the Box. There’s also McMenamins Raleigh Hills Pub, which serves up “Northwest-style pub fare” like house-made pizza and soup under grand vaulted ceilings; a mural depicting longtime customers decorates the side of the building. “McMenamins is a Portland chain that buys up old historic buildings and turns them into restaurants and movie theaters,” explains Ferrand, who also recommends The Old Market Pub & Brewery.

TriMet transit along Beaverton-Hillsdale Highway
The neighborhood is mainly car-dependent, but Raleigh Hills residents will sometimes make use of the TriMet transit system. Bus 54 stops along the Beaverton-Hillsdale Highway (aka Oregon Route 10), connecting Beaverton Transit Center with Raleigh Hills, Hillsdale and Downtown Portland. There’s also the MAX Light Rail System, and Portlanders can take the Red Line all the way from Beaverton to Portland International Airport. Major roadways surrounding the neighborhood include U.S. Route 26, Oregon Route 217, Interstate 84 and Interstate 5. Medical care is easily accessible at the Providence St. Vincent Medical Center, a non-profit acute care teaching facility that delivers more babies than any other hospital in Oregon.
