Active volunteer fire company in West Taylor Township community
When the Laurel Run Dam broke in 1977, West Taylor Township, 5 miles from Johnstown, Pennsylvania, was swept away. “There was a devastating flood in 1977,” says Derek Yerty, the captain of the West Taylor Township Volunteer Fire Company. “Laurel Run Dam broke and killed a lot of people. Whole families were washed away.” In some ways, the township is still recovering from the flood, and residents keep to themselves. However, parts of the community are branching out. The West Taylor Township Volunteer Fire Company hosts events year-round and participates in several Johnstown community events. In turn, the people of Johnstown venture into West Taylor to support the fire department, and small food-based fundraisers have been expanding over the years because of it. “Some people come for the perogies,” says Yerty. “People from Johnstown, Westmont and Richland. There are also a lot of good people in the township who support us.” Natural disasters can bring people together and push them apart. Rebuilding a community takes years, and West Taylor Township is certainly on the right path.

Events hosted by West Taylor Township Volunteer Fire Company
In honor of a fallen firefighter, the township volunteer fire company has an annual memorial softball tournament in August. “Each team chooses a charity and plays,” says Yerty. “We’ve raised about $55,000 for charities across the nation.” The fire company consistently reaches outside the township to support those in need and provide for the community. In October, the West Taylor Ladies Auxiliary has a Homemade Peroghi Sale to raise funds for the fire department, which draws orders from Johnstown to Richland. The fire company heads into Johnstown during the fall for the Johnstown Halloween Parade. Beginning at 7 p.m., participants start at Sargent’s Stadium and travel along Main Street. In 2023, a Run For Your Life Halloween Fun Run took place before the parade. Religious services are held at Bowserdale United Methodist Church, Peniel Praise Community Church and Albright United Methodist Church.
