Like many New England villages in the industrial era, West Warwick Centre was once a bedroom neighborhood for the mills. Neighbors worked in nearby production facilities during the day, making cotton and other textiles, and came home at night to three-decker homes in urban residential areas. The fabric makers left town long ago, but the historic homes of yesteryear are still there today. West Warwick Centre is now a residential area with big, leafy trees, front lawn accouterments like bird baths and driveway basketball hoops, and streets that look like they’ve seen their fair share of traffic. The median listing price for a single-family home in West Warwick sits around $350,000. Price is the main reason people move to West Warwick, says Jess Powers, team leader and associate broker at Hope State Living with eXp Realty and a 20-year resident of Rhode Island. "It does have a small little downtown area that had a moment of vibrancy in the 1950s and 1960s, but as downtowns got hit pretty hard, the 1980s were not nice to West Warwick, and the 1990s were rough," she says. "There was a resurgence in the 2000s, but it got hit a little harder in the market shift and has taken longer to recover."

Houses in West Warwick Centre sit right next to each other on quarter-acre lots. Colonials from the early 1900s tend to cost between $300,000 and $400,000, ranch-style homes can go for about $340,000, early 20th-century colonials can cost $460,000 and multifamily homes can go for $400,000. On sunny weekend days, neighbors convene at River Point Park, which sits along the curve of the Pawtuxet River. Kids play Little League games here on the baseball field, neighbors play basketball and tennis on sports courts and teenagers practice their tricks at the nearby skate park. Washington Secondary Bike Path, a 19-mile rail trail, runs on the south side of River Point Park. In-line skating, biking, walking and horseback riding happen on this rustic pathway.

West Warwick Centre is mostly residential, but there are also a few restaurants tucked in that give the neighborhood some extra flavor. Bring the whole family to House of Wu, a cozy Chinese restaurant with big, spacious booths. Get some wings and pizza to go from PVD Pizza West Warwick. Sit down on one of the wooden bar stools at La Casita and enjoy some empanadas and fried plantains. Grocery stores like Trader Joe’s and Market Basket are about 2 miles east in Warwick. So is basically every major retail chain. Nearby stores include PetSmart, Ulta Beauty and Famous Footwear.

Kids living in West Warwick Centre can attend the West Warwick Public Schools, rated B-minus by Niche. Some kids attend John F. Horgan Elementary School (rated C), John F. Deering Middle School (rated C-plus) and West Warwick High School (rated B). West Warwick High School was the first school in Rhode Island to produce the musical “Frozen” after it won a nationwide contest by Disney Theatrical Group. West Warwick Centre is minutes from Route 2 and Interstate 95, which runs north to Maine and south to Miami. Providence is 15 miles away, Boston is 64 miles north and Hartford, Connecticut is 76 miles west. West Warwick Centre was once all about the mills, but with its cute houses and easy access to commercial districts and major highways, it’s become a lot more than that. "If you work in south county, Providence is too far away and you don't want to deal with traffic, so West Warwick would be a good place to pick," Powers says. "It's very suburban."
