Westminster neighborhood with access to parks and schools

Main roads and single-family homes are interspersed with parks and green spaces in Walnut Grove, a suburban neighborhood roughly 6 miles northwest of central Westminster. The primarily residential area is within walking distance to the surrounding outdoors and nearby public schools. “A lot of people enjoy that it’s an established community. The school district is rated well, and the affordability factor is there,” says Real Estate Agent and Managing Broker Allison Cassieri with North Metro Realty, who has over 10 years of experience. “The location is nice, too. It’s close to Boulder and a quick commute to Downtown Denver.”

A mixed bag of suburban homes on decent-sized lots

Most homes in Walnut Grove are lined along loops and cul-de-sacs, with front lawns adorned by mature trees, shrubbery and the occasional privacy fence. “You’ve got larger lots, which gives room for kids and pets to play,” Cassieri says. Contemporary ranch-style homes are common, alongside bi-levels and split-levels. These houses were built in the 1970s and 1980s and cost between $400,000 and $675,000, depending on property size. Multi-story homes with New Traditional or Craftsman architecture are also found in the neighborhood, built in the 1980s and 1990s. Some have simple exteriors, while others have bright colors and front gables. Prices range from $550,000 to $850,000. Newly built multi-story townhouses are found along the main roads of Walnut Grove. These properties are attached with tucked-in garages and share modern designs. Two and three-bedroom units go for $725,000 to $800,000.

B-rated Jeffco public schools with quality programs

Children living in Walnut Grove can attend schools in the Jefferson County School District, which allows choice enrollment. The neighborhood lies within Jeffco’s Standley Lake Articulation Area. Lukas Elementary School offers hands-on science programs, while Wayne Carle Middle School has an outdoor lab program for sixth graders. Both schools earn B grades from Niche. From there, students can go to Standley Lake High School, which receives a B-plus. Standley Lake High is an International Baccalaureate World School offering the IB Diploma Programme.

Walnut Grove’s neighborhood parks and adjacent open spaces

Mayfair Park is one of many green spaces in the neighborhood that has a playground, multi-use field and walking paths. There’s also the Jessica Ridgeway Memorial Park and the Roemersberger Baseball Fields. For natural recreation, the Ketner Open Space has walking trails that surround Ketner Lake. Fishing and wildlife watching are allowed.Directly south of Walnut Grove is the Standley Lake Regional Park & Wildlife Refuge. The 3,000-acre open space encompasses Westminster’s largest body of water – non-motorized boating and fishing are allowed, but swimming is not. There are multiple campgrounds for overnight stays and hiking and biking trails that weave through the area. “People love being close to Standley Lake. It’s nice to have such a majestic space right in your backyard,” Cassieri says. Farther north is the Westminster Hill Open Space, known for its rolling prairie lands and off-leash dog area.

Nearby shopping centers and chain restaurants

While the neighborhood is primarily residential, the intersection of Wadsworth Parkway and 100th Avenue has multiple stand-alone restaurants and shopping centers. There’s The Brunch House, which specializes in Mexican American breakfast platters, and LaMar’s Donuts and Coffee. Standley Shores shopping center has King Soopers and fast-food options like Subway and McDonald’s. Standley Lake Marketplace has several small businesses like Amish Furniture Gallery and eateries like Contigo Taqueria.A little over 2 miles east is the Shops at Walnut Creek, which has dozens of national retailers and big-box stores like T.J. Maxx, Michaels and Target. There are also many chain restaurants such as Bonefish Grill and Panera. The Flatiron Crossing shopping mall is about 5 miles north of the neighborhood with a robust selection of department stores, national retailers and clothing brands.

Traveling in and out of Walnut Grove

Walnut Grove’s residential streets feature narrow sidewalks, bike lanes and pedestrian crossings, creating a walkable and cyclist-friendly community. “It’s pretty close to coffee shops and restaurants, so people can take a bike or walk over,” Cassieri says. When it comes to leaving the area, commuters can access Colorado state Route 121, known as Wadsworth Parkway, and use it to head into downtown Denver, about 17 miles southeast. The Denver International Airport is roughly 35 miles away.
